Getting There: Introduction

Entebbe is a picturesque and amazingly green city situated on the northern shores of the majestic Lake Victoria. The former colonial capital of Uganda today attracts travelers with its calm, relaxed atmosphere, which differs strikingly from the bustle of large metropolises.

The city is often called the "green garden" of the country thanks to its wide shady streets, magnificent botanical gardens, and well-kept parks. Although for many tourists Entebbe is simply the first stop on their itinerary due to the international airport located here, this city deserves attention as a destination in its own right. Here you can stroll along the beaches, observe rare birds, and enjoy a unique combination of history and tropical nature.

By Plane

The most convenient and common way to get here is by air, as this city serves as the main international gateway to Uganda. Entebbe International Airport (EBB) is located on a scenic peninsula jutting into Lake Victoria, so landing is often accompanied by breathtaking views of the endless water surface and green islands.

The airport receives regular flights from Europe, the Middle East, and neighboring African countries, ensuring stable connections with the world. Since the air harbor is effectively located within the city limits of Entebbe, travelers do not have to spend hours on long transfers: the journey to most hotels and local attractions takes very little time.

By Bus

A bus journey to Entebbe is an excellent opportunity to enjoy the colorful landscapes of East Africa, especially if you are traveling from neighboring countries. The scenic route from the Tanzanian city of Bukoba, covering about 320 kilometers, will take approximately 6–8 hours, allowing you to see the western coast of Lake Victoria. Also popular is the route from the Kenyan city of Kakamega: covering 270 kilometers with border crossing usually takes about 5–7 hours depending on traffic.

For those ready for longer journeys, there is an option departing from Musoma in Tanzania, but this complex route of over 700 kilometers can stretch to 12–15 hours. Most international buses arrive at terminals in Kampala, from where it is easy to get to Entebbe by local minibus taxi or transfer in 40–60 minutes.

By Car

The most popular driving route to Entebbe leads from the country's capital, Kampala. The cities are connected by the modern Entebbe Expressway toll road. This highway allows you to cover a distance of about 40 kilometers in just 30–45 minutes, avoiding the heavy traffic and congestion characteristic of the old road. Traveling on the new highway not only saves time but also offers greater comfort.

If you plan to rent a vehicle, it is important to remember that driving in Uganda is on the left. Rental services are well developed: you can pick up a car right at the airport or in the city. Travelers have access to both self-drive options and car rentals with a professional driver, which is often the preferred choice for those unaccustomed to the local driving style.

Travel Tips

Preparing for your trip to Entebbe will help avoid minor inconveniences and allow you to fully focus on relaxing by Lake Victoria. We have compiled a list of useful recommendations that will make your trip to this green city comfortable and safe.

  1. Clothing and belongings. Given the warm equatorial climate, opt for light clothing made from natural fabrics such as cotton or linen. Be sure to bring long-sleeved items and trousers for evening walks: this is the best protection against mosquitoes and respects local modesty. Also, do not forget a light raincoat, as tropical showers can be sudden.
  2. Transport. To get around the city, it is most convenient to use ride-hailing apps or official taxi services. Popular motorcycle taxis known as "boda-bodas" are the fastest but also the riskiest mode of transport; if you decide to use them, always request a helmet from the driver.
  3. Finances. The national currency is the Ugandan Shilling. Although cards are accepted in large hotels and supermarkets, you will need cash for visiting markets, souvenir shops, and small cafes. It is better to exchange money at licensed exchange points (Forex bureaus), where the rate is often more favorable than at the airport or hotels.
  4. Health and safety. It is strictly not recommended to drink tap water—use only bottled water, even for brushing your teeth. Entebbe is a peaceful city, but basic vigilance is useful: keep an eye on your belongings in crowded places and do not leave them unattended.
  5. Communication. English is the official language in Uganda, so the language barrier is practically non-existent here. Locals speak it fluently. However, if you learn a couple of greeting words in the Luganda language, it will elicit sincere smiles and goodwill from the townspeople.
  6. Local etiquette. Ugandans are very polite and value the observance of social norms. It is customary to start a conversation with a greeting and the question "How are you?". When visiting the city, try to dress neatly and avoid overly revealing outfits, especially outside of beach areas.
  7. What to avoid. It is strictly forbidden to photograph government buildings, military facilities, police posts, and personnel in uniform. Violation of this rule can lead to serious problems with the authorities and confiscation of equipment.
  8. Electricity. The country uses British standard sockets (Type G) with three flat pins. We recommend taking care of an adapter for charging your gadgets in advance, as they are not available in all hotels.

Following these simple rules will help you quickly adapt to the local rhythm of life. Entebbe is a hospitable city, and with proper planning, your stay here will leave only pleasant memories.
