Carry-On Baggage Policy
Air Tahiti Nui ensures that passengers can keep their essential items close at hand with a convenient cabin baggage policy. Regardless of the travel class, every passenger is permitted to bring one piece of carry-on luggage and one personal accessory into the cabin. The personal accessory includes items such as a handbag, laptop case, camera bag, or infant bag, and must not weigh more than 3 kg (6.6 lbs). It should be small enough to fit under the seat in front of you.
The main carry-on bag must adhere to strict size and weight limits to ensure safety and comfort on board. The maximum dimensions for the cabin bag are 115 cm (45 inches) (Length + Width + Height). The weight allowance varies slightly by class:
- Moana Economy & Moana Premium: One bag up to 10 kg (22 lbs).
- Poerava Business: One bag up to 12 kg (26 lbs).
Checked Baggage Allowances
The airline operates on the "Piece Concept" for all its routes, including flights transiting through Los Angeles or connecting to Papeete. This generous policy allows travelers to bring substantial luggage, with allowances increasing for premium cabins. Each checked bag must not exceed a total linear dimension of 158 cm (62 inches).
- Moana Economy Class: 1 bag with a maximum weight of 23 kg (50 lbs).
- Moana Premium Economy Class: 2 bags, each with a maximum weight of 23 kg (50 lbs).
- Poerava Business Class: 2 bags, each with a maximum weight of 32 kg (70 lbs).
Travelers holding Club Tiare Silver or Gold status may be entitled to additional baggage benefits, such as an extra checked piece. It is always recommended to check your specific ticket conditions before packing.
Excess Baggage Fees
If your luggage exceeds the standard allowance in number, weight, or size, additional fees will apply at the airport. Charges are cumulative; for example, a bag that is both overweight and oversized will incur two separate fees.
- Overweight Bags: A fee applies for bags weighing between 23 kg and 32 kg (in Economy classes). No single bag may weigh more than 32 kg (70 lbs); any item exceeding this limit must be transported as cargo.
- Oversized Bags: Luggage with dimensions between 158 cm and 200 cm (79 inches) is subject to a surcharge. Items larger than 200 cm are generally not accepted as checked baggage and must be shipped via freight.
Special Items: Sports Equipment and Instruments
Recognizing that many travelers visit Tahiti for its world-class outdoor activities, Air Tahiti Nui offers a particularly surfer- and diver-friendly policy. Passengers are often entitled to check one additional piece of sporting equipment free of charge, provided it weighs no more than 23 kg (50 lbs) and does not exceed 250 cm (98 inches) in length.
Eligible items for this complimentary allowance include:
- Surfboards, paddleboards, kneeboards, and kite-surfing gear.
- Golf bags containing clubs and shoes.
- Diving equipment (tanks must be empty and valves open).
Musical instruments, such as a ukulele (a Tahitian favorite), can be carried as cabin luggage if they fit within the standard carry-on dimensions. Larger instruments, like cellos or guitars, may need to be checked or require the purchase of an extra seat if they are to be transported in the cabin.
Restricted and Prohibited Items
For the safety of all passengers, certain items are strictly prohibited in both carry-on and checked luggage. Common prohibited items include explosives, compressed gases (unless medically approved), flammable liquids, and strong oxidizers. Lithium batteries and power banks must never be packed in checked luggage; they must be carried in your cabin bag. Additionally, restrictions apply to liquids, gels, and aerosols in carry-on bags, which must follow the standard 100ml (3.4 oz) rule and fit in a transparent, resealable plastic bag.
Tips for Packing Efficiently
To ensure a smooth journey to the islands, consider these packing tips:
- Weigh Before You Go: Use a portable luggage scale to ensure your bags are within the limits, especially if you plan to bring back heavy souvenirs like black pearls or local crafts.
- Protect Fragile Items: Hard-shell suitcases are recommended for long-haul travel to protect against impacts. Wrap fragile items in soft clothing.
- Label Your Bags: Attach a sturdy name tag with your contact details to every piece of luggage, including sports equipment. Placing a copy of your itinerary inside your suitcase is also a smart precaution in case the outer tag is lost.
- Monoi Oil: If you purchase Monoi oil in Tahiti, ensure the bottles are tightly sealed and packed in your checked luggage, as they exceed carry-on liquid limits.
