General Weather Overview

The climate in Hechi can be characterized as humid subtropical, making this region attractive to visit at almost any time of the year. There are no harsh winters here: even in the coldest months, January and December, the average temperature holds at a comfortable 10–11°C, and frosts are extremely rare. This allows tourists to enjoy nature without needing to pack heavy winter clothing.

Summer in Hechi is long and quite hot. From June to September, the air consistently warms up to 26–27°C, and maximum values often exceed 30°C. A characteristic feature of the local climate is the high number of rainy days, especially in the spring-summer period. From March to August, rainfall can occur very frequently — statistics show more than 20 rainy days per month, so an umbrella or raincoat will become indispensable travel companions.

Many consider autumn, especially October and November, to be the most favourable time for a trip. During this period, the heat subsides to a pleasant 17–20°C, and the number of rainy days decreases noticeably compared to summer. This is the ideal time for long walks and exploring the region's unique karst landscapes in comfortable weather conditions.

Temperature

Throughout the year, the climate in Hechi demonstrates a smooth transition of seasons without extreme frosts, which makes the city accessible for visits at various times. The coldest month is traditionally January with an average temperature of about +10.2°C, while the peak heat occurs in July, when averages reach +27.4°C. This annual range ensures a perceptible but not sharp contrast between winter and summer.

The summer period here can be characterized as hot and humid. In July and August, daytime highs consistently stay at the level of +30°C... +31°C, and nights remain very warm, rarely cooling below +24°C. Winter in Hechi is mild and cool, but not freezing: in December and January, night temperatures usually do not drop below +7°C... +8°C, so travellers are unlikely to need heavy winter clothing.

It is also worth considering daily temperature fluctuations, which are most noticeable during the transitional seasons. For example, in spring (April) and autumn (November), the difference between daytime warmth and evening coolness is about 7 degrees. During the day, the air can warm up to a comfortable +20°C... +23°C, but by evening it freshens to +13°C... +16°C, making layered clothing the best choice for walks at this time.

Precipitation

When planning a trip to Hechi, it is worth noting that precipitation here is a frequent and regular occurrence. Rainfall is unevenly distributed throughout the year, but a wet season clearly stands out, lasting from late spring to the end of summer. During this period, an umbrella or raincoat will become your main companions, as the sky is often overcast.

The peak of rainy weather falls in June, which is the wettest month of the year: statistics record about 26 rainy days and the highest volume of precipitation (an average of 16 mm). A high frequency of rain is also observed in May and July (up to 25 days with precipitation), so summer travels in this region of China are often accompanied by high humidity.

A drier and more stable period sets in during the second half of autumn and lasts until the beginning of winter. The most favourable months in terms of weather can be called October, November, and December. In December, the number of rainy days drops to a minimum (about 10 days), and precipitation volume is only 2 mm, making this time most suitable for those who prefer to avoid dampness.

What to Pack

A trip to Hechi requires a careful approach to your wardrobe due to high humidity and frequent precipitation throughout the year. Summer here is hot and rainy, so give preference to light clothing made from natural breathable fabrics such as cotton or linen. Given that the number of rainy days is high even in the warmest months, a compact sturdy umbrella or a high-quality raincoat will become your main companions on any trip.

For the winter months and the off-season, when the average temperature drops to +10°C...+11°C and nights become cool (down to +7°C), the principle of layering is ideal. Take a warm jumper, a fleece jacket, and a windproof jacket with you — they will protect against dampness and wind. In spring and autumn, the weather can be changeable, so the ability to quickly remove or put on an extra layer of clothing will ensure your comfort throughout the day.

Pay special attention to footwear: for walking around the city and picturesque surroundings, comfortable waterproof sneakers or trekking boots with non-slip soles are best, as roads are often wet. Also, do not forget to pack sunscreen and a hat in your suitcase, because even through the clouds the sun can be quite active, and insect repellents will be useful for protection in the humid climate.
