The modern history of this maritime hub began on February 13, 1997, when the national government decided to establish a special authority to develop the region's port infrastructure. The early 2000s marked significant milestones in its development: in 2001, the Liburnska obala waterfront was reconstructed, and in 2003, a specialized berth for cruise liners was added at Istarska obala. These changes allowed the city to welcome the world's largest ships, significantly increasing the flow of tourists.

A true technological breakthrough occurred in 2008 with the launch of the ambitious "New Port of Zadar — Gaženica" project. Construction included modern terminals, 180-meter-long breakwaters, and customs control zones. The final phase of the passenger port construction was completed in 2018, bringing the city's maritime gateway to a high European standard.

To simply walk around the area, view the modern piers, and appreciate the scale of the infrastructure, 1–2 hours is usually sufficient. This is enough time to take beautiful photos against the backdrop of the sea and giant ships if you don't plan on setting sail.

As maritime traffic never stops for a moment, the facility operates around the clock. You can arrive here at any time of day or night, as the port is open 24 hours a day from Monday to Sunday.

Despite the 24-hour operation of the grounds themselves, administrative offices and ferry company ticket counters usually have their own regulated schedules, so for handling paperwork or inquiries, it is best to aim for standard business hours.

The port area is somewhat removed from the old town, but a visit can easily be combined with exploring other points of interest. Exploring the surrounding area will allow you to see the contrast between the industrial power of modern Croatia and its rich historical heritage.
