Overview

The climate in Noboribetsu is characterized as temperate, with four distinct seasons. The city experiences significant temperature fluctuations throughout the year, which is typical for regions with continental influence. Winters here are cold, while summers are warm and comfortable.

The winter months, from December to February, bring sub-zero temperatures, with averages around -4°C, making them the coldest months. Spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November) are transitional seasons with gradual increases and decreases in temperature respectively, offering milder weather conditions. Summer, especially in July and August, is the warmest period, with average temperatures around 20°C and highs reaching 22-23°C.

Precipitation is distributed relatively evenly throughout the year, although there is a slight increase in volume and the number of rainy days in August. Overall, the amount of precipitation is not excessive in any month. This means visitors should prepare for various weather conditions depending on the season, from freezing weather in winter to warm days in summer, with a moderate chance of rain or snow year-round.

The warmest period falls in August, when the average temperature reaches +20.8°C (low +18.5°C, high +23.1°C), followed by July with an average of +19.7°C. Thus, the annual temperature range in Noboribetsu is quite significant, ranging from moderate winter frosts to comfortable summer warmth.

Precipitation

In Noboribetsu, precipitation patterns change noticeably depending on the season. In winter, from December to February, when temperatures consistently stay below freezing, precipitation falls mainly as snow. Interestingly, while January, February, and December receive the lowest amount of precipitation in millimeters (about 2 mm), December and January see a significant number of days with precipitation—16 and 13 days, respectively. This suggests frequent but generally light snowfall during this period.

In spring, starting from March when the average temperature rises above zero, snow gradually gives way to rain. In March, April, and May, the amount of precipitation is about 3 mm per month, with 11-12 rainy days. The summer months, especially August, are the wettest in Noboribetsu. August sees the highest amount of precipitation—about 6 mm—and records the maximum number of rainy days for the year, averaging 17 days. June and July are also characterized by rain, with about 4 mm of precipitation and around 13 rainy days.

In autumn, from September to November, the amount of precipitation gradually decreases. September receives about 5 mm, while October and November each see about 4 mm. The number of rainy days in the autumn months is 12-13. By late November, as temperatures drop, rain may turn back to snow. Overall, Noboribetsu does not have a distinct monsoon season, but August stands out as the rainiest month. In winter, snowfall prevails, being more frequent than heavy.

Packing Tips

When planning a trip to Noboribetsu, it is important to choose the right wardrobe, given the pronounced change of seasons. Winter (December to February) is cold here, with average temperatures well below zero (ranging from -4.9°C to -2.2°C in January) and frequent snowfall, despite low overall precipitation levels. Therefore, you will need very warm clothes: a down jacket or warm winter coat, hat, scarf, gloves, thermal underwear, and waterproof winter boots. In spring (March-May), the weather gradually improves: it is still cool in March (averaging 0.4°C), but becomes significantly warmer by May (around 11.1°C). Layering is key during this period: sweaters, fleece jackets, a light jacket, and comfortable walking shoes.

Summer (June-August) in Noboribetsu is warm and humid, especially August, which is the rainiest month (6 mm of precipitation, 17 rainy days) with an average temperature of about 20.8°C. Bring light clothing, t-shirts, and shorts, as well as a raincoat or umbrella and waterproof shoes. Don't forget sunscreen and a hat for sunny days. Autumn (September-November) brings a gradual cooling: September is still quite warm (averaging 17.7°C), but by November the temperature drops to 4.6°C. During this time, layering is again useful: warm sweaters, a jacket (possibly insulated by November), and comfortable boots. An umbrella or raincoat may also come in handy, as precipitation is possible.

Regardless of the season, comfortable walking shoes are a must, as Noboribetsu offers many interesting places to explore. The principle of layering your clothes will help you easily adapt to temperature changes throughout the day, especially in the transitional seasons of spring and autumn. A small backpack will be useful for day trips to carry water, a raincoat, and other small essentials.
