Overview

The climate in Oshu, Japan, is classified as temperate with four distinct seasons. Winters here are quite cold, with average temperatures in January and February dipping below freezing. In contrast, summers are warm and even hot, especially in July and August, when average temperatures rise above 20°C and maximums can reach 27°C. Spring and autumn serve as transitional seasons with gradual temperature changes, offering comfortable conditions for a visit.

A notable feature of the weather in Oshu is the relatively even distribution of precipitation throughout the year, based on the number of wet days. Although monthly precipitation volumes are small (ranging from 3 to 6 mm), the number of "wet" days remains significant almost year-round, varying from 12 to 20 days per month. This suggests frequent but perhaps not very intense precipitation. The highest amount of rainfall and the greatest number of "wet" days occur in the summer months, especially July and August, which may indicate a more humid summer period.

Temperature

The climate in Oshu is characterized by distinct seasonal temperature changes, offering visitors a variety of weather conditions throughout the year. The annual temperature range is quite significant. The coldest month is January, with an average temperature of -1.6°C and average lows dropping to -4.6°C. Conversely, the heat peaks in August, which is the hottest month with an average temperature of 23.8°C and average highs reaching 27.1°C.

The summer months in Oshu, spanning from June to August, feature warm and occasionally hot weather. In June, the average temperature stays around 18.3°C, gradually rising through July (22.8°C) and August (23.8°C). Daytime highs in the middle of summer can reach 26–27°C, while nights remain fairly warm, with temperatures around 19–20°C. Based on the number of wet days, summer is also characterized by higher humidity, which makes the heat more noticeable.

The winter period, from December to February, brings frosty weather to Oshu. Average temperatures during these months hover around zero or drop below. January and February are the coldest, with average lows of -4.6°C and -4.3°C respectively, while daytime highs rarely rise above 1.5–2.7°C. Throughout the year, there are noticeable daily temperature fluctuations. The difference between average daytime highs and nighttime lows is approximately 5–10°C. For example, in April, the average high is 13.9°C and the low is 4.4°C, a difference of nearly 9.5°C.

Precipitation

In Oshu, precipitation occurs year-round, with no distinct dry season. A characteristic feature is the frequency of precipitation, although its intensity is generally low. The total monthly precipitation fluctuates between 3–6 mm, but it is spread across a significant number of days.

The wettest months are July and August, each seeing 6 mm of precipitation. August averages 20 wet days, while July has 19 days. June and September are also quite damp, with 5 mm of precipitation and about 16 wet days. During the summer, this primarily falls as rain.

In winter, from December to February, monthly precipitation is around 3 mm. Despite this, the number of wet days remains high: about 19 days in January and December, and 14 days in February. Given the sub-zero average temperatures in these months (January: -1.6°C, February: -0.8°C) and temperatures around zero in December (0.6°C), winter precipitation in Oshu falls mainly as snow, most often light.

In spring and autumn, precipitation is also moderate, mostly 3–4 mm per month. The fewest wet days occur in April (about 12 days) and October (about 13 days). This makes these months the periods with the least frequent, yet still regular, precipitation, usually in the form of rain.

Packing Tips

When planning a trip to Oshu, it is important to consider the local climate to ensure your stay is as comfortable as possible. A key principle when packing should be layering, as this allows you to easily adapt to temperature changes throughout the day and between seasons. Regardless of the time of year, comfortable shoes for long walks will be your best companion. Given that Oshu has quite a few rainy days throughout the year, a compact umbrella or a light raincoat will be very useful accessories.

If your trip to Oshu is scheduled for the cold period, which lasts roughly from November to March, be sure to pack warm clothing. Average winter temperatures hover around zero and can drop lower, so you will need an insulated jacket (perhaps down or synthetic fill), warm sweaters or fleece jackets, a hat, scarf, and gloves. Thermal underwear is also a good idea. Although monthly precipitation is low, "wet days" are frequent, which can mean light snow or drizzle, so waterproof outerwear and footwear will come in very handy.

With the arrival of spring around April, temperatures begin to rise, reaching comfortable levels by May and the summer months. In summer (June–August), Oshu is warm, with average temperatures rising above +20°C. During this period, it is best to opt for light, breathable clothing made from natural fabrics. However, summer is also the period with the most precipitation and "wet days," so an umbrella or raincoat remains essential. Don't forget sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses. In autumn (September–October), the weather is pleasantly cool—perfect for walking—though you may need a light jacket or sweater in the evening.
