This site in Spain was accidentally discovered in 1913 and underwent thorough restoration, for which it was awarded the prestigious Europa Nostra Medal of Honor in 1984. Today, the complex combines not only ancient hammams but also the magnificent Villardompardo Palace, whose facade dominates the Plaza de Santa Luisa de Marillac.

In addition to historical interiors, it houses the Manuel Moral International Museum of Naive Art and the Museum of Arts and Popular Customs. What to Do

The main impression of visiting the complex is a walk through the halls of the ancient hammam. You can explore four main rooms: the vestibule with its characteristic red and white arches, the cold room, and the warm and hot rooms. Of particular note is the central room with an octagonal dome on horseshoe arches, through the openings of which soft light enters the space, creating a magical atmosphere.

After immersing yourself in the history of Al-Andalus, it is worth heading up into the Villardompardo Palace itself. Here you can visit the unique Museum of Naive Art, which houses works by talented self-taught artists, and the Museum of Arts and Popular Customs, which tells the story of the traditions of the Jaén province. Temporary exhibitions and cultural events are regularly held in the former Church of La Visitación.

Don't forget to look for the Almohad-period frescoes from the 12th century, which were discovered recently in 2019. You can conclude your tour at one of the center's observation decks, which offer beautiful views over the rooftops of old Jaén and its surroundings. It is an ideal place for a leisurely study of Spain's architectural heritage.

Getting There

The Villardompardo Palace is located in the heart of Jaén's Old Town. It is most convenient to get here on foot if you are already in the historic center near the cathedral. The narrow streets of this area create a special atmosphere, and signs for the Baños Árabes will help you find your way.

If you are using public transport, look for bus routes heading to the Plaza de la Constitución stop. From there, the complex is a 5–10 minute walk. For those arriving in the city by train, it is about a 15–20 minute walk from the Jaén railway station or a short taxi ride.

For travelers by car, it is important to remember that parking in the immediate vicinity of the palace can be difficult due to the dense historical buildings. It is best to leave your car in one of the municipal parking lots in the Plaza de las Angustias area and walk to the entrance, enjoying the city views.

History & Facts

The history of this place began in the 11th century, when luxurious public baths were built in Jaén following the collapse of the Caliphate of Córdoba. They continued to function even after the city was reconquered by Christians in 1246, but over time they were converted into a tannery. A decisive turn in the site's fate occurred in 1592, when the Viceroy of Peru, the Count of Villardompardo, decided to build his Renaissance palace here.

To create a solid foundation for the palace, the ancient baths were completely filled with earth and debris. Paradoxically, it was this decision that saved the monument from destruction by time and urban development. For centuries, no one suspected the existence of the hammam beneath the palace halls until the historian Enrique Romero de Torres discovered them during an inspection of the building in 1913.

In 1931, the baths were recognized as a national monument, but their full restoration only began in the 1970s. The restoration was carried out by the Berges dynasty of architects—father and son—who returned this architectural masterpiece to the world. Today, this complex is a living testament to how different cultures—Muslim and Christian—layered upon one another over the centuries.

Time Needed

To leisurely explore all levels of the complex, including the Arabic baths, the palace halls, and the two museum exhibitions, most visitors need between 1 and 2 hours. If you plan to study the ethnographic collections in detail or linger at a temporary art exhibition, you should allow a little more time.

A walk through the underground bath halls themselves takes about 30–45 minutes. This is an optimal choice for those who want to see the main attraction without overloading their sightseeing schedule in Jaén.

Working Hours

You can visit the complex throughout the week, with the exception of Mondays, when the center's doors are closed to the public. On weekdays and Saturdays, there are extended opening hours: from 9:00 to 20:00, making it easy to fit a visit into an evening stroll through the city.

On Sundays, the complex operates on a reduced schedule—only in the morning, from 9:00 to 14:00. Please note that entry to the halls usually stops half an hour before the official closing time.
