The history of this place dates back to the days when a fortress stood here. The park was officially founded in 1875 and was originally named Alexander Park. Emperor Alexander II personally planted the first oak tree during his visit. Fragments of historical fortifications, such as the ancient powder tower and arcade, have survived to this day, serving as reminders of the territory's rich past. At various times, famous figures like Gogol, Pushkin, Chekhov, and Anna Akhmatova strolled along its alleys.

Today, Taras Shevchenko Park is not just a historical landmark but also a popular leisure destination. It is home to the famous Chornomorets Stadium, a Luna Park with rides for the whole family—including the country's tallest Ferris wheel—and numerous monuments. Beautiful sea views open up from here, and convenient paths lead directly to the famous Lanzheron Beach.

History & Facts

The history of Taras Shevchenko Park in Odessa is rich in events and dates back to a time when military fortifications were located on this site. Initially, part of the Turkish Hadjibey was situated here, and by 1795, a Russian fortress was built, becoming an important element of border defense. However, its military significance was short-lived: as early as 1811, after the borders of the Russian Empire shifted to the southwest following another Russo-Turkish war, the fortress was abolished.

After the fortress was decommissioned, its territory was given a new, less heroic purpose. The land was handed over to the Quarantine: a quarantine yard, a prison, and even a cemetery for those who died of the plague were located here. The idea to turn this place into a park area first appeared in 1840 according to the plan of architect F. K. Boffo, and trees were even planted, but the garden grew wild due to lack of care. The official birth of the park took place on September 7, 1875, when it was grandly opened during an imperial visit, and it soon received the name Alexander Park.

A curious historical anecdote is also associated with this place, featuring Alexander Pushkin as the main character. In 1824, long before the park was founded, the poet accidentally wandered into the territory where an artillery battery was still stationed at the time. The officer on duty, Ensign P. A. Grigorov, recognizing the famous guest, was so delighted that he ordered a salute to be fired in his honor from actual cannons, which greatly surprised both the poet and the local residents.

Time Needed

To fully enjoy a walk through Taras Shevchenko Park, it is worth setting aside 2 to 3 hours. This time will be quite enough to leisurely walk through its main alleys, see historical sites such as the remains of the Quarantine Wall, and simply relax on one of the benches, enjoying the sea air and greenery.

However, if your plans include a more detailed exploration of the park, your visit time may increase significantly. For example, visiting the Luna Park with its rides, taking a tour of the Chornomorets Stadium, heading down to Lanzheron Beach to relax by the sea, or participating in one of the festivals often held here will require additional time. Thus, a visit can easily take half a day or even more, depending on your interests.

Working Hours

Taras Shevchenko Park is a public space and is open to visitors 24/7 and year-round, allowing you to enjoy its beauty at any time of the day or year. Entrance to the park territory is free, and no prior booking is required. You can come here for a morning jog, a daytime stroll, or an evening promenade under the stars.

However, please note that entertainment facilities within the park, such as the famous Luna Park with its rides, operate on their own schedules. Usually, they are open daily from approximately 10:30–11:00 AM until late evening (9:00 PM–11:00 PM), but hours may vary depending on the season, weather conditions, and holidays. During the winter, some rides may operate on a reduced schedule or be temporarily closed. Tickets for the rides must be purchased at the Luna Park ticket offices. For the most accurate and up-to-date information on the operating hours of specific attractions, it is recommended to check their official websites or social media pages immediately before your visit.
