History & Facts

Construction of this majestic structure began in 1403. Originally, Timur ordered it to be built for his favorite grandson and heir, Muhammad Sultan, whose sudden death was a heavy blow to the ruler. A complex of a madrasah and a mosque already existed on this site, but it was decided to create something truly special for the tomb.

Over time, the purpose of Gur-e-Amir changed. The mausoleum became the family vault of the entire Timurid dynasty. Not only the great conqueror Tamerlane himself rests here, but also his sons Shah Rukh and Miran Shah, as well as his famous grandson—the scientist and astronomer Ulugh Beg. Each tombstone in the hall is a page from the great history of the East.

The architectural ensemble of the mausoleum is considered a benchmark of Central Asian architecture. Its proportions and decor inspired the builders of many subsequent masterpieces, including the famous Taj Mahal in India. Remarkably, over hundreds of years, the building has practically retained its original appearance, allowing us to see it today just as Timur did.

Time Needed

To leisurely explore all the details of the exterior facade and the rich interior decoration, most travelers need about 1–1.5 hours. This time is quite sufficient to soak in the solemn atmosphere of the site and read the information boards.

If you plan to study the ornaments in detail, visit nearby souvenir shops, or have a photoshoot in different lighting, you should set aside a bit more time. The mausoleum is particularly impressive in its details, which you'll want to examine carefully and without haste.

Working Hours

The Gur-e-Amir Mausoleum is open to visitors daily, including weekends, which is very convenient for planning excursions. You can visit any day of the week from 9:00 AM to 7:00 PM.

We recommend arriving closer to opening time or a few hours before closing to avoid large crowds of tour groups and enjoy the silence and majesty of this place in a more peaceful setting.
