The main feature of the mausoleum, attracting pilgrims from all over the world, is an unusually long tombstone measuring about 18 meters. According to legend, the relics of the biblical Prophet Daniel are kept here, and the impressive size of the tomb is linked to a beautiful story that the saint continues to grow spiritually even after his death.

The complex acquired its modern appearance in the early 20th century, when an elegant five-domed building was erected over the ancient burial site. This place, steeped in silence and centuries-old history, is considered the sacred center of Samarkand, where everyone can feel the connection between times and cultures.

History & Facts

According to the most famous legend, the relics of the Prophet Daniel were brought to Samarkand by Amir Timur at the end of the 14th century. The great commander brought them from the city of Susa during one of his campaigns, believing that the presence of the saint's remains would bring his capital unprecedented prosperity and divine protection.

Legend has it that the caravan carrying the shrine suddenly stopped on the banks of the Siab River, and the horse (or a camel, in other versions) refused to go further. Timur took this as a heavenly sign and ordered the remains to be buried on this very hill. This is how this unique pilgrimage site originated.

Interestingly, the building standing today was constructed much later—in 1900, replacing earlier structures from the Timurid era. One of the most mysterious legends remains the belief that the prophet's relics continue to mysteriously grow inside the tomb, which is why the tombstone had to be lengthened over time to its current impressive size.

Time Needed

For a comfortable and thoughtful tour of the entire complex, visitors usually need 1 to 2 hours. During this time, you will have enough time to explore the interior of the mausoleum, marvel at the length of the legendary sarcophagus, and enjoy the tranquility on the banks of the Siab River.

If you decide to descend to the holy spring or spend time on a meditative walk through the grounds, it's worth setting aside a bit more time. This place does not call for rushing, so it’s best to explore it at a calm pace, soaking in the special atmosphere of the shrine.
