Designed by the renowned architect Santiago Calatrava, the theater building captures the imagination with its futuristic shapes and scale. It rises 14 floors above ground and extends three floors below it, reaching a total height of 75 meters. This makes the Palace of the Arts Reina Sofía the tallest opera house in the world, which is an outstanding achievement of engineering and architectural thought in itself.
The total area of this grand structure is about 40,000 square meters, and its length reaches 230 meters. Under the striking, smoothly curved metal roof, which resembles either a giant helmet or a seashell, there are four main auditoriums, each with unique acoustic and technical characteristics. In addition to the main stages, the palace provides other, smaller venues for various performances, making it a multifunctional cultural center.
