The main architectural feature of the cathedral is its scale: the building's height reaches 60 meters. The gilded main dome, 14 meters in diameter, contrasts strikingly with four smaller light-blue domes. Inside the church, a unique technique was implemented — an additional drum with steps is hidden under the main one, creating an impressive open under-dome space, which had previously rarely been used in the construction of such structures.

This cathedral is not only a place of prayer but also an important cultural point on the city map. Its golden crosses are visible from many parts of the city, inviting tourists to appreciate the grandeur of the interiors and the peaceful atmosphere of the temple grounds. Christ the Saviour Cathedral is where the history of faith meets the modern art of architecture.

History & Facts

The history of this majestic structure began in the 1990s when there was an urgent need to build a new cathedral for the city's Orthodox community. The construction process was overseen by Archpriest Dmitry Sidor, who remains its rector to this day. Construction proceeded at a rapid pace and was fully completed by the year 2000.

A significant event for the faithful took place on September 27, 2000, when the first solemn service was held within the cathedral walls. The appearance of this church was an important stage in the religious life of the region because, following the return of the Holy Cross Cathedral to the Greek Catholic Church, Orthodox believers required a new spiritual center of comparable scale.

Architecturally, the church is unique not only for its size but also for its engineering solutions. For instance, the "drum within a drum" system allowed for a vast interior space without extra supports, which was an innovative technique in ecclesiastical architecture at the time. The cathedral is also known as the Cathedral of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, emphasizing its continuity of tradition.

Time Needed

To fully enjoy the beauty and tranquility of this place, we recommend planning a visit of 1 to 2 hours. This is enough time to carefully examine the interior paintings, appreciate the scale of the architectural forms, and simply enjoy some quiet time away from the city's hustle and bustle.

If you plan to attend a service or wish to climb into the under-dome space to see the cathedral's unique construction, you should set aside a bit more time. Also, don't forget to leave 20–30 minutes for a stroll around Cyril and Methodius Square, which surrounds the church and is a pleasant place to relax in its own right.

Working Hours

Currently, official opening hours for the cathedral are not listed in public sources in a strict format. However, as a rule, the doors of Orthodox churches are open to visitors daily from early morning until the end of evening services.

Before planning your visit, we strongly recommend checking the cathedral's official website or confirming current information on-site. Typically, the most solemn services take place in the morning and on church holidays, when the cathedral looks especially magnificent.
