General Weather Overview

Nha Trang, located in Vietnam, boasts a tropical savanna climate that ensures warm weather year-round. Average annual temperatures fluctuate slightly here, remaining comfortable for beach holidays and excursions. You will hardly encounter sharp temperature changes, making trip planning quite predictable in this regard.

Two main seasons are clearly distinguished in Nha Trang's climate: the dry season and the rainy season. The dry season usually lasts from January to April-May, characterized by minimal rainfall and plenty of sunny days. This time is considered the most favourable for visiting. The rainy season typically falls between May-June and December, with peak rainfall and the highest number of rainy days in September, October, and November. However, even in the rainy season, showers are often short-lived and occur mainly in the afternoon or at night.

Overall, the weather in Nha Trang allows you to enjoy a holiday at almost any time of the year, but the choice of the optimal period depends on your preferences. If you are looking for maximum sun and minimum rainfall, aim for the first half of the year. If you are not bothered by periodic tropical downpours that bring freshness, then the second half of the year can also offer a pleasant pastime, often with more favourable accommodation prices.

Temperature

Temperature conditions in Nha Trang are characterized by pleasant warmth throughout the year, although there are seasonal nuances. The annual range of average temperatures is from 22.9°C in January to 28.7°C in June and August. The hottest months are traditionally the summer ones – June and August, when the average maximum temperature reaches +32.1°C and +32.2°C respectively. The coolest, if one can say so for a tropical climate, are January and December with average minimum temperatures around +20.3°C and +21.1°C.

Summer months in Nha Trang, roughly from May to August, are distinguished by consistently hot weather. Daytime temperatures often rise above +30°C, and nights remain very warm, with temperatures rarely dropping below +25°C. High humidity is also observed during this period, making the heat more palpable. The "winter" period, from December to February, brings milder and more comfortable coolness. During the day, the temperature stays around +25°C...+26°C, and at night it can drop to a pleasant +20°C...+21°C, creating ideal conditions for walks and active recreation without exhausting heat.

Temperature fluctuations between day and night in Nha Trang exist but are not sharp. The difference between the average maximum and average minimum temperature during the month is usually between 4°C and 7°C. The largest daily variations are observed in March and April (about 7°C), while in November and December they are minimal (just over 4°C). In general, such temperature stability makes a holiday in Nha Trang predictable and comfortable at any time of the year, allowing you to choose a season to your liking.

Precipitation

In Nha Trang, there is a distinct seasonal distribution of precipitation, which determines the presence of a pronounced dry season and rainy season. Although the tropical climate implies the possibility of precipitation at any time of the year, its intensity and frequency vary significantly from month to month.

The dry season in Nha Trang usually falls in the period from January to April. During these months, rainfall is minimal. February stands out particularly, being the driest month with an average of only about 1 mm of rainfall and approximately 8 rainy days. January, March, and April are also characterized by low rainfall (about 2 mm each) and a relatively small number of days with rain – from 8 to 13. This time is considered the most favourable for beach holidays and excursions under clear skies.

The rainy season in Nha Trang begins around May and continues until December, reaching its peak in autumn. The highest amount of precipitation falls in November – on average about 11 mm. September and October are also very wet months, primarily in terms of rain frequency: each has up to 27 rainy days, with precipitation amounts of 9 mm and 8 mm respectively. In the summer months (May-August), the amount of precipitation is moderate (4-5 mm), but the number of rainy days is already significantly higher than in the dry season, ranging from 22 to 24 days. Precipitation in Nha Trang typically takes the form of tropical downpours – they can be heavy but are often short-lived, quickly giving way to the sun.

What to Pack

When packing your suitcase for a trip to Nha Trang, focus on the tropical climate. The foundation of your wardrobe should be light, breathable clothing made from natural fabrics such as cotton or linen. T-shirts, shorts, sundresses, light trousers, and skirts will be relevant year-round. Considering that average temperatures even in the "coolest" months (January, December) stay above +20°C, you are unlikely to need warm clothing. However, a light cardigan or shawl may come in handy for evening walks or in air-conditioned rooms.

During the dry season, which lasts roughly from January to April, when rainfall is minimal (about 1-2 mm per month), the main focus should be on sun protection. Be sure to bring sunscreen with high SPF, a head covering (hat or cap), and sunglasses. Comfortable open shoes, such as sandals or flip-flops, will be ideal for the beach and walking around the city. In the rainy season, from May to December, and especially at its peak from September to November (when rainfall reaches 8-11 mm and the number of rainy days reaches 27), it is worth taking care of protection against moisture. A light foldable umbrella or raincoat won't take up much space but will prove very useful. Quick-drying clothes and shoes that are not afraid of water will also be handy. Despite the rain, the temperature remains high, so bulky waterproof items are not needed.

Regardless of the season, don't forget swimwear – Nha Trang's beaches are inviting all year round! Comfortable walking shoes are also always relevant if you plan on going on excursions. The principle of layering is not as critical here due to the lack of sharp temperature changes, but a light cover-up over a t-shirt can be comfortable. And, of course, do not forget mosquito repellent, especially if you plan evening walks or trips to nature.
