How to get there: Introduction

When planning a trip to Oranjestad, you are embarking on an amazing journey to the historic centre of the island of Sint Eustatius, part of the Caribbean Netherlands region. This small yet atmospheric city, divided into Upper and Lower districts, attracts lovers of history, diving, and peaceful relaxation away from noisy tourist crowds.

Although reaching Oranjestad directly from most parts of the world is not possible due to its remote location, a well-planned route with a transfer on neighbouring islands will allow you to find yourself in this tropical paradise. The main method of arrival is by air, however, for those who enjoy sea voyages, alternative options exist.

By Plane

The fastest and most convenient way to reach the island is by air transport. The city is served by F. D. Roosevelt Airport (EUX), which accepts regular flights from neighbouring major islands, such as Sint Maarten. Flying in a small aircraft over the turquoise waters of the Caribbean Sea will in itself become an unforgettable part of your adventure.

The airport is located very close to the centre, so the transfer to your accommodation will take mere minutes. Thanks to the compact nature of the terminal, passing through passport control and baggage claim here is much faster and calmer than in major international hubs.

By Train

Railway connections in the city of Oranjestad and throughout the entire island are completely absent. The specific terrain and small area of the island make the construction of railways impractical, so it is impossible to get here by train from any point in the world.

Lovers of rail travel will have to exchange the familiar sound of wheels for the hum of aircraft turbines or the sound of sea waves. Within the Caribbean Netherlands region, the main modes of transport remain automobiles and light aviation.

By Bus

Since Oranjestad is located on an island, it is impossible to get here by intercity bus from other countries. Classic bus tours or regular routes from the mainland are not applicable here due to geographical isolation.

Public transport within the city itself is poorly developed and does not have a clear schedule familiar to many tourists. To move around the island, travellers most often use rented cars or taxis, as bus services are episodic in nature.

By Car

You cannot arrive in Oranjestad in your own car from the mainland, as the city is located on an island in the Caribbean Sea. Car travel is only possible in the form of renting a car immediately upon arrival at the airport or seaport.

Taxis are the most popular way to get from the arrival terminal to your hotel. Distances here are small, so the journey time is usually no more than 10–15 minutes, and the cost of the trip is fixed or agreed upon with the driver before boarding.

Travel Tips

Visiting this unique Caribbean corner requires a little preparation to ensure your holiday is as comfortable as possible. The island lives in its own calm rhythm, and knowing local features will help you adapt faster.

  1. Clothing and Climate. A tropical climate prevails here, so bring light clothing made of natural fabrics (cotton, linen). Be sure to bring a head covering and high-quality sunscreen, as well as comfortable shoes for walking on hilly terrain.
  2. Transport. Public transport is practically absent. For freedom of movement, it is best to rent a car or scooter. The city of Oranjestad is compact enough for walking, but transport is needed to explore the whole island.
  3. Finances. The official currency on the island of Sint Eustatius is the US Dollar (USD). Credit cards are accepted in hotels and major restaurants, but always keep small cash denominations for small shops and taxis.
  4. Language. The official language is Dutch, but the vast majority of locals speak fluent English, which is the main language of communication in daily life.
  5. Electricity. The mains voltage is usually 110 V, with US-style sockets. Travellers from regions with different standards may need an adapter to charge gadgets.
  6. Health. Tap water is usually of good quality, but tourists are recommended to drink bottled water. Stock up on repellents, as mosquitoes can be active in the evening.
  7. Local Etiquette. People here are very friendly. It is customary to greet passersby on the street, even if you do not know them. Politeness and a smile are the key to good service and communication.

By following these simple recommendations, you will be able to fully immerse yourself in the atmosphere of the "Golden Rock", as this island is often called, and get the maximum enjoyment from your trip to Oranjestad.
