One of the main features of the establishment is the use of local ingredients. The menu features varieties infused with Sichuan pepper, Oolong tea, or cinnamon. This approach makes the flavor of the drinks truly unique and recognizable, setting Great Leap Brewing apart from other venues in the city.

The atmosphere here encourages casual conversation: the minimalist interior design emphasizes the focus on the quality of the product itself. It is the perfect location for those who want to see the modern, cosmopolitan side of the Chinese capital and try innovative craft varieties in a historical context.

What to Do

The main reason to visit Great Leap Brewing is, of course, the craft beer tasting. Depending on the season, the brewery offers up to 40 different varieties. Be sure to try the signature Honey Ma Blonde with a subtle hint of Sichuan pepper, or the refreshing Iron Buddha Blonde featuring the aroma of the famous Chinese tea.

In addition to the drinks, the establishment is famous for its American cuisine. Juicy burgers and crispy chicken wings are the perfect accompaniment to your chosen brew. This place is ideal for taking a break from the hustle and bustle of the metropolis, meeting interesting people, and experiencing Beijing's modern bar culture with friends.

Getting There

Great Leap Brewing is conveniently located in the Dongcheng district on Xin Zhong Street. The main landmark for travelers is the Dongsishitiao metro station, from which the brewery is just a few minutes' walk. The exact address of the venue is Xin Zhong Jie, No. 乙12.

For those who prefer comfort, taxis or China's popular ride-hailing apps are always available. The current location is much more accessible for tourists than the chain's very first brewery, which was often called one of the hardest places to find in the city due to the maze of hutongs.

History & Facts

The history of Great Leap Brewing began in October 2010, when American Carl Setzer and his wife Liu Fang decided to introduce the residents of Beijing to craft beer culture. With just $17,000 in personal savings, they opened their first location in a restored traditional courtyard house, or siheyuan. It was a bold venture that quickly resonated with both expats and the local crowd.

The initial business plan included only four types of beer, including the now-legendary Honey Ma Blonde and Pale Ale #6. Success came rapidly: within a couple of years, the brewery received an official production license and began expanding, opening new locations. By the end of 2013, production volumes had grown to 18,000 liters per month.

Today, Great Leap Brewing is rightfully considered a pioneer of the craft revolution in China. The establishment doesn't just copy Western traditions; it actively integrates local ingredients into its recipes, creating a unique product with a Chinese character that is highly valued by experts worldwide.
