How to get to Siping

Getting There: Introduction

Siping is a prefecture-level city located in the western part of Jilin province in China. Situated at the junction of Liaoning, Jilin, and Inner Mongolia, it historically formed as a vital strategic hub, earning the honorary title of "Hero City."

Today, Siping attracts travelers with its rich past and cultural diversity. Here you can touch the history of the Manchu dynasty, visit memorial complexes, and appreciate the distinctive atmosphere of Northeast China. This place is perfect for those who want to discover the non-tourist side of the country and immerse themselves in the study of local heritage.

By Plane

Since Siping itself does not have an operating civil airport for tourist flights, it is best to plan your journey through major transport hubs in neighboring regions. The nearest convenient arrival point is Changchun: Longjia International Airport is located just over 100 kilometers away and receives aircraft from many cities.

An alternative and equally popular option is flying to Shenyang. Taoxian Airport is approximately 170 kilometers from the destination and often offers a wider selection of flights and airlines. From both metropolises, you can easily reach your final goal by high-speed train or bus, making the journey comfortable and fast.

By Train

The railway is one of the most convenient ways to reach the city, as it is historically an important transport hub in the northeast of the country. High-speed and regular trains arrive here continually from neighboring metropolises such as Changchun and Shenyang. The trip from these major centers takes very little time, allowing travelers to reach their destination quickly and comfortably.

The main passenger flow is handled by Siping Railway Station, located directly within the city limits. Thanks to its favorable location at the intersection of main lines, it is easy to get here even from smaller neighboring cities, for example, from Tieling. The extensive network of routes makes a train journey an excellent choice for those who want to enjoy views of Jilin province from the carriage window.

The fastest route runs from Changchun: comfortable buses cover the distance of about 120 kilometers in an average of one and a half to two hours. Services depart regularly, allowing flexible arrival planning and enjoyment of Jilin province views.

If you are heading from the south, the trip from Shenyang will take a bit longer — about three hours for a distance of 180 kilometers. Also, a convenient option is the route from the city of Tieling, located just 80 kilometers from the destination: such a trip usually lasts about an hour, making it an excellent choice for a short transit.

Travel Tips

Preparing for a trip to Siping requires considering local features characteristic of Northeast China. These recommendations will help you avoid common difficulties and make your trip as comfortable and safe as possible.

  1. Clothing and Essentials: The climate here is sharply continental with distinct seasons. In winter, temperatures can drop to -20°C and below, so be sure to bring high-quality thermal underwear, a warm down jacket, and non-slip footwear. Summers can be hot and humid — light natural fabrics will be useful, but always keep a raincoat or umbrella with you.
  2. Transport: The most convenient way to get around the city is by taxi, the prices for which are quite reasonable here. It is recommended to install the DiDi app (the Chinese equivalent of Uber) or Alipay with a built-in car-hailing service, as explaining an address to a driver on the street without knowing the language will be difficult.
  3. Finances: International cards (Visa, Mastercard) are rarely accepted. The main payment method is mobile apps like Alipay or WeChat Pay, to which overseas cards can now be linked. Nevertheless, always keep a small supply of cash yuan (small denomination notes) for markets or small shops.
  4. Health and Safety: Drinking tap water is strictly not recommended — buy bottled water. Pharmacies in the city are easy to find by the green cross sign, but most medicines have only Chinese names, so pack a first aid kit with familiar preparations in advance.
  5. Communication: English is practically not used in Siping. It is vital to download an offline translator to your phone (for example, Baidu Translate or Google Translate with a downloaded language pack). It is also useful to have a photo or printout of the name of your hotel and necessary attractions in characters.
  6. Local Etiquette: In restaurants, it is customary to order several shared dishes for the table. An important rule at the table: never stick chopsticks vertically into rice — this resembles ritual offerings to ancestors and is considered a bad omen. Tipping is not customary.
  7. What to Avoid: Do not attempt to cross the road relying only on the "zebra crossing": drivers may not yield to pedestrians even at crossings, so move carefully and in the flow with locals. Also, avoid discussing political topics and criticizing the state system.
  8. Additional Tip: Since many familiar western services (Google, WhatsApp, YouTube) are blocked in the country, take care of connectivity in advance. The best option is purchasing a tourist eSIM or installing a reliable VPN service before crossing the border.

Following these simple tips, you will be able to focus on exploring the rich history and culture of the city without being distracted by domestic inconveniences. Siping is a welcoming place, ready to reveal its secrets to the prepared traveler.
