How to get to Luxor

How to Get There: Introduction

Majestic Luxor, situated on the banks of the Nile in the very heart of Egypt, is rightfully considered the world's largest open-air museum. You can reach this legendary city by various means: from a direct flight to an atmospheric journey by train or car across the desert. A well-developed transport network makes it easy to include a visit to the ancient temples in any itinerary across the country.

By Plane

The fastest way to see the ancient monuments is to fly into Luxor International Airport, which receives both domestic and international flights. The airport is conveniently located just a few kilometres from the city, ensuring a quick transfer to hotels and cruise ships.

If there are no direct tickets, travellers often choose to fly to neighbouring cities, for example, to Hurghada (about 210 km in a straight line) or Aswan, to then continue the journey by ground transport.

Travel Tips

A trip to Luxor requires a little preparation so that the hot climate and local atmosphere leave only pleasant impressions. Follow these simple recommendations for a comfortable journey:

  1. Clothing and Climate. Choose light, breathable clothing made of natural fabrics that cover your shoulders and knees to protect yourself from the scorching sun and observe local standards of modesty. A head covering and comfortable shoes are mandatory.
  2. Transport. To move between the East and West Banks of the Nile, use the local ferry or motorboats. It is convenient to get around the city by taxi or horse-drawn carriages (calèches), but always negotiate the price in advance.
  3. Finances. The official currency is the Egyptian Pound. Major hotels accept cards, but be sure to carry cash, preferably in small denominations, to pay for souvenirs, taxis, and tips (baksheesh).
  4. Health. Drink only bottled water and avoid ice in street cafes. Always use high SPF sunscreen, even in cloudy weather.
  5. Communication. The main language is Arabic, but staff in tourist areas understand English well. Knowing a couple of greeting phrases in Arabic will endear you to the locals.
  6. Local Etiquette. It is customary to leave small tips for any services. Be polite but firm when communicating with street vendors if you do not plan to buy anything.
  7. Visiting Time. Plan excursions to the Valley of the Kings and temples for the early morning (from 6:00) to avoid the peak heat and the main crowds of tourists.

Observing these rules will help you focus on the grandeur of ancient architecture and get the maximum pleasure from visiting the "City of Palaces".
