The monastery is closely linked to the International Foundation for the Preservation of the Mahayana Tradition (FPMT) and even served as its headquarters in the past. Today, Kopan Monastery is widely known for its educational programs. It hosts courses on Tibetan Buddhism and meditation, as well as retreats, providing a unique opportunity for international guests to immerse themselves in Buddhist wisdom and practice in an authentic setting.
More than 700 monks and nuns, mostly from Tibet and the Himalayan regions of Nepal, live and receive spiritual education on the monastery grounds. This creates a special atmosphere of devotion and scholarship. Next to the main complex is the Khachoe Ghakyil Ling nunnery, which also belongs to Kopan and plays an important role in preserving and developing Buddhist traditions for women.
