Saint Stephen Tower

About

Towering over the historic city center is the majestic Stephen’s Tower — an architectural landmark that Baia Mare is rightfully proud of. Standing at approximately 40 meters tall, this structure is the only surviving fragment of the 14th-century Gothic Church of Saint Stephen. Today, the tower serves as the primary symbol of the city and is recognized as an important historical monument throughout Romania.

Built in a Neo-Gothic style, the tower combines the ruggedness of a medieval fortress with the elegance of ancient chapels. Its facade is adorned with bas-reliefs depicting the city's coat of arms and medieval knights, while its copper roof glimmers impressively in the sun. For a long time, the tower served as a bell tower and an observation post, helping townspeople spot approaching danger or fires in time.

Visitors can see more than just architectural forms; they can experience living history. At the foot of the tower in Citadel Square (Piața Cetății), archaeological zones featuring the foundations of ancient churches are open to the public. This spot draws travelers with its peaceful atmosphere and the chance to view the city from a bird's-eye perspective.

What to Do

The main adventure awaiting guests is the climb to the top of the tower. The journey upward begins with an authentic spiral stone staircase at the base, which eventually gives way to wooden flights. The reward for the climb is a breathtaking 360-degree panorama: the tiled roofs of the old town, modern neighborhoods, and the picturesque outlines of the Maramureș mountains will unfold before you.

During the ascent, be sure to stop at the levels housing the ancient tower clock mechanism and the massive bells. Watching the gears that have marked time in the heart of Baia Mare for centuries is a special treat for fans of mechanics and history.

Once back on the ground, take some time to explore the open-air museum in Citadel Square. Here, you can see the outlines of ancient temple foundations marked directly on the pavement, along with information boards telling the story of the medieval fortress. It’s an excellent spot for atmospheric photos and a thoughtful look into Transylvania's past.

Getting There

Stephen’s Tower is located in the very heart of the historic center at Piața Cetății, Turnului. Since the old part of the city is quite compact, you can reach Citadel Square on foot from almost any central district. This is a great way to soak up the atmosphere of old Baia Mare.

If you are arriving in the city from other regions of Romania, such as Cluj-Napoca or Bucharest, it is most convenient to use the train or an intercity bus. Traveling by car from Cluj-Napoca takes about 1.5–2 hours via the A3 motorway. From the railway station or bus terminal, you can reach the tower by taxi or local public transport, which will take you to the edges of the pedestrian zone.

For those traveling by private vehicle, paid parking is available in the vicinity of the square. The area is fully adapted for tourists and is considered safe for walking at any time of day.

History & Facts

The history of this majestic structure began in the mid-14th century. St. Stephen's Church itself, of which only the bell tower remains, was built between 1347 and 1376 and was a unique example of a two-nave church in Transylvania. Stephen’s Tower was erected later, in 1446, by order of Voivode John Hunyadi to commemorate his triumphant victory at the Ialomița River.

Over the centuries, the tower has survived many trials. In the 16th century, it was struck by lightning, leading to a serious fire and subsequent reconstruction between 1559 and 1561. The church itself, which had fallen into disrepair over time, was demolished in 1847 using gunpowder, as the cost of its repair was deemed unbearable for the city. The tower was saved, although it suffered heavily from fire once again in 1869.

The monument acquired its modern Neo-Gothic appearance following restoration work at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. The most recent major update concerned the roof: in 2008, the storm-damaged slate covering was replaced with a sophisticated copper roof, a project on which the city spent approximately €200,000. Today, it is an officially recognized historical monument, carefully preserving the memory of the region's medieval past.

Time Needed

To leisurely explore the site and climb to the observation deck, you should set aside 1 to 2 hours. This is plenty of time to explore the archaeological zone at the base, examine the ancient bas-reliefs, and navigate the flights of stairs.

It is important to keep in mind that the climb involves narrow stone and wooden stairs. If you are traveling with children or plan to study the clock mechanism in detail, it's best to have a bit of extra time. The view of the city and the Maramureș mountains in the glow of the setting sun is a sight well worth staying a little longer for.
