Tren de l'Oreneta

About

Imagine a cozy corner in the Sarrià-Sant Gervasi district, where a true miniature engineering masterpiece is hidden among the greenery. The Oreneta Park Miniature Railway (Tren de l'Oreneta) is more than just a ride; it is the oldest garden railway in a country like Spain, welcoming guests since 1978. It is located in a picturesque forest at the foot of the famous Tibidabo mountain.

The route, stretching over 600 meters, turns a short five-minute ride into a thrilling adventure. Small trains, including exact replicas of steam, diesel, and electric locomotives, dash through tunnels, cross bridges, and a viaduct, skillfully imitating a classic mountain journey. This is a place where Barcelona reveals a completely different, intimate, and nostalgic side.

The park surrounding the tracks is famous for its panoramic city views and welcoming atmosphere. Everything here is for real: from the classic brown cardboard tickets to the depot where railway enthusiasts care for their steel charges. It is an ideal space for family leisure, combining technical aesthetics with natural beauty.

What to Do

The main highlight of the visit is, of course, the mini-train journey. The sensation of riding in an open carriage to the sound of a real whistle and bell delights not only children but adults as well. You can see authentic coal-fired steam boilers in action and watch the coordinated work of the conductor and driver. The route, with its natural elevation changes, creates a full sense of being on a serious railway voyage.

After the ride, be sure to stop by the depot to examine the locomotive collection in detail. For nature lovers, the park offers shaded paths and viewpoints with impressive vistas of the city blocks. Deep within Oreneta Park, there are excellent picnic areas where you can have a snack while the children play on the playgrounds with swings.

If your visit coincides with a Sunday, young visitors have an additional opportunity: pony rides. The atmosphere here is infused with a love for detail and family comfort, making the park a great spot for a leisurely Sunday morning. Don't forget to bring cash for tickets and a camera to capture the miniature trains against the lush greenery.

Getting There

You can reach this secluded spot on the edge of the city via public transport. The most convenient way is to take the FGC L6 metro line to the terminus station Reina Elisenda, then transfer to bus V3, which will take you directly to the park entrance on Carrer dels Esports. This route is especially recommended for visitors with strollers, as the path here is flatter and more gradual.

An alternative option is to take bus No. 75 or H4 to the Pg. Reina Elisenda – Av. J.V. Foix stop, then walk uphill for about 10 minutes. If you prefer comfort, a taxi from the city center will get you there in approximately 20–25 minutes, depending on traffic.

Since the park is located on hilly terrain, the main entrance to the railway is in its upper section. It is recommended to wear comfortable shoes for walking on uneven ground. Try to avoid entering from the Gaspar Cassadó side if you have small children, as there is a rather steep, unpaved incline.

History & Facts

The history of Tren de l'Oreneta began over 40 years ago, driven by the passion of a group of ten enthusiasts. These individuals, possessing deep knowledge in mechanics, electrical engineering, and civil engineering, decided to create not just an attraction, but a real working miniature railway model. The project opened its doors to the first passengers in 1978, becoming the first garden railway in Spain.

Since 1981, a unique depot has operated within the park, which today carefully houses and maintains 12 miniature steam locomotive models. It is important to note that the entire complex is managed by a volunteer association. These people dedicate their free time to preserving classic locomotives, personally performing complex repairs and keeping the equipment in perfect working order.

The route itself was designed to mimic real mountain tracks, featuring three different track gauges. Over the decades of its existence, the railway has preserved its authentic 1970s atmosphere, evolving from a private hobby into one of the most soulful attractions in the Catalan capital.

Time Needed

To fully experience the railway and the park itself, you should set aside 1 to 2 hours. The train ride itself takes about 5–10 minutes, but you should factor in time for purchasing tickets and potential waiting in line, especially on sunny Sundays.

The remaining time can be spent walking to the viewpoints, which offer a magnificent panorama, or relaxing in the picnic area. If you are traveling with children, they will likely want to spend extra time at the park's playgrounds, so the visit can easily stretch into an entire morning.

Working Hours

The railway operates on a very limited schedule, which adds a certain exclusivity to the visit. Trains depart only on Sundays and public holidays from 10:30 AM to 1:30 PM. On weekdays and Saturdays, the attraction is closed to the public.

Please note that train operations may be suspended in the event of unfavorable weather conditions, such as heavy rain. It is recommended to plan your visit for the first half of the day to enjoy the ride before the ticket office closes.
