The museum occupies an ensemble of two elegantly connected historic buildings that formerly belonged to the famous Tereshchenko family of philanthropists. House No. 15 was given by Nikola Tereshchenko to his eldest daughter Varvara, who married Bohdan Khanenko—it is their names that the museum bears today. The neighboring house No. 17 was the property of the younger daughter, Evfrosiniia Sakhnovska. The foundation for this outstanding collection was the passion and collecting talent of Bohdan and Varvara Khanenko.
The collection of the Khanenko Museum is striking in its diversity and high artistic level, spanning both European and Asian art. The former Khanenko mansion (No. 15) houses an impressive European exposition, including masterpieces of painting, sculpture, and decorative arts. Since 2006, the Sakhnovsky house (No. 17) has hosted the finest pieces of the Asian collection, allowing visitors to take a fascinating journey into the world of Oriental art. The museum's rare icons from Byzantine and Eastern Christian art are of particular value and pride, serving as true gems of the collection.
