The history of Kyiv Zoo began with a noble initiative. It was founded on March 21, 1909, through the efforts of the Kyiv Society of Nature Lovers. Initially, its inhabitants were housed on the territory of the current A.V. Fomin Botanical Garden, and the collection was quite modest — only 17 species of animals and birds.

Funds were needed to expand the collection and care for the animals. In May 1909, a donation box was installed at the park entrance, and this idea proved incredibly successful. In just six months, enough funds were raised to purchase 398 animal specimens representing 115 different species. Among the patrons who supported the zoo's development were famous figures such as Emperor Nicholas II, Countess Maria Brodskaya, as well as outstanding figures of that time, including architect Vladislav Horodecki and artist Sergei Svitoslavsky.

An important stage in its development was 1919, when the zoo became state property and received the official status of "Kyiv Zoological Park." Venantius Burdzinsky, one of the main initiators of its creation, was appointed the first director. The 1920s were a period of prosperity: the collection was actively replenished with rare species, and serious scientific work began. In 1935, its current territory was finally secured, fenced, and construction began on pavilions for elephants and monkeys. Later, in the early 1980s, a large-scale reconstruction was carried out, giving the zoo a more modern look.
