How to get to Zhangjiajie

Zhangjiajie is a world-renowned city in Hunan Province, serving as the gateway to the mystical world of "floating rocks" that inspired the creators of the movie "Avatar". This unique nature reserve attracts millions of tourists, offering developed infrastructure and convenient logistics for travelers of all levels. You can get here in various ways: fly by direct flight, use scenic driving routes, or combine a train journey with a bus transfer while planning your trip across China.

The fastest and most comfortable way to find yourself at the foot of the famous mountains is to fly into the international Zhangjiajie Hehua Airport (DYG). The air hub is located just a few kilometers from the city center and is well connected by flights to the country's major metropolises, allowing you to save travel time.

Alternatively, you can consider flying to neighboring cities, for example, Changde, Enshi, or Huaihua. These airports are located at a distance of 120–180 km, and from there it is easy to continue the journey by ground transport, enjoying the views of the province.

Railway connections to the city are excellently developed, making the train a popular way to reach the region. A modern station operates here, as well as a station receiving high-speed trains from many major cities in China. This allows tourists to reach the destination in comfort, enjoying the picturesque landscapes outside the window.

If there are no direct tickets, neighboring cities Changde or Huaihua can become convenient transfer hubs. From there, it is easy to get to the final point of the route by local train or bus, which travelers often choose for a deeper immersion into the local atmosphere.

A bus trip is an affordable option to get to Zhangjiajie from neighboring regions, allowing you to see the non-tourist side of the country. Regular services connect the city with numerous settlements in Hunan Province, and modern intercity coaches ensure an acceptable level of comfort.

Usually, buses arrive at the central bus station, from where it is convenient to get to hotels and entrances to the national park. Travel time may vary depending on the departure point, but the picturesque views of the mountain roads compensate for the duration of the journey.

Traveling by car offers freedom of movement and the opportunity to make stops at the most beautiful spots. The most convenient and shortest route leads from the city of Changde: a distance of 159 km can be comfortably covered in about 2.3 hours.

If you are driving from Enshi or Huaihua, the road will take more time — about 3.6–3.7 hours, as you will have to drive 265–277 km. Taxis or transfers for such distances are available, but it is worth agreeing on the price in advance, considering toll roads and difficult mountain terrain.

A trip to Zhangjiajie promises to be unforgettable, but the specifics of the region require certain preparation. Follow these tips to ensure your adventure goes smoothly and comfortably.

6. Beware of Monkeys! Wild macaques inhabit the park. Never feed them, do not tease them, and keep food tightly closed in your backpack to avoid animal aggression.
