This modern arboretum, a point of pride preserved by Spain, was created to demonstrate the incredible diversity of the world's woody flora. The garden is named after the prominent botanist Pius Font i Quer and is divided into several thematic zones, each transporting the visitor to a specific climatic environment — from harsh coniferous forests to vibrant Mediterranean landscapes.

For tourists, this place is valuable for its harmony and careful planning. Here, you can see how thousands of plants coexist, forming natural ecosystems. Thanks to its proximity to the university campus, the arboretum is imbued with a spirit of knowledge and discovery while remaining a quiet and picturesque corner for leisurely walks in the fresh air.

What to Do

The main adventure at the Arboretum is a journey around the world through four major global biomes. You can walk through boreal coniferous forests, feel the cool air of temperate deciduous forests, breathe in the scents of sclerophyllous Mediterranean groves, and even see elements of temperate rainforests. In total, the garden has reconstructed about 18 characteristic landscapes, bringing together 500 plant species.

Special attention should be paid to the water features. Water is the connecting link of the entire exhibition: picturesque ponds and artificial streams not only decorate the area but also maintain the microclimate. A walk along the water system, fed by the garden's own cistern, creates a feeling of total immersion in nature.

Visitors are invited to explore over 4,500 trees and shrubs. Thanks to convenient paths and well-thought-out navigation, you can enjoy birdwatching, macro photography, or simply the silence. Getting to know rare flora from Chile or California in the Mediterranean zone is an excellent educational experience for the whole family.

Getting There

Its convenient location in the Ciutat Jardí district makes the arboretum easily accessible for visitors. The site is located at Carrer Enric Farreny, 49, in the immediate vicinity of the campus of the School of Agrifood and Forestry Science and Engineering (ETSEA) of the University of Lleida.

If you prefer public transport, buses run regularly from the city center to the university campus, from where the garden entrance is just a few minutes' walk. You can also use taxi services — a trip from the city center (a distance of about 3–4 km) will take no more than 10 minutes.

For those traveling by private car, there is parking available on-site. Reaching the site by car is easy by following signs toward the science park and university buildings in the northwestern part of the city.

History & Facts

This green oasis is named after an outstanding individual — Pius Font i Quer (1888–1964). A native of the area, he became one of the most significant Catalan botanists and pharmacists, dedicating his life to studying and classifying the region's flora.

The idea for the arboretum was born in academic circles. The project was developed in detail by a group of professors from the University of Lleida, who aimed to create more than just a park—a living open-air laboratory. Construction began in December 2007 on land provided by the city council and required an investment of approximately 3 million euros.

Landscaping and planting work continued for about four years. The official opening to the public took place in April 2013. Although the garden is already welcoming guests, it continues to develop: some thematic zones, such as those mimicking the forests of Chile and California, are still being supplemented with new specimens today.

Time Needed

To take a leisurely stroll through all the thematic zones and admire the landscape details, a typical visitor will need 1.5 to 2.5 hours. The garden covers a fairly large area, and each of its biomes deserves individual attention.

If you are passionate about botany or photography, we recommend setting aside half a day for your visit. This will allow you to walk along the streams at a relaxed pace, rest by the ponds, and study the information plaques detailing the unique species of trees and shrubs gathered here from all over the world.

Working Hours

The Arboretum usually welcomes guests from Tuesday to Sunday, opening its doors at 10:00 and remaining open until 17:00. Please note that Monday is a day off when the garden is closed to the public.

A nice bonus for tourists is the opportunity for free admission on the first Sunday of every month, as well as on city holidays. Since the schedule may change depending on the season or special events, it is recommended to check the official website before your trip.
