General Weather Overview
The climate in Huangshan can be described as humid subtropical, with four distinctly defined seasons. The city experiences significant temperature fluctuations throughout the year, allowing tourists to choose the most comfortable time to visit depending on their preferences.
Summer in Huangshan is generally hot and humid, with average temperatures in July and August reaching 28°C, while maximums can exceed 30°C. This period, especially June, is also characterised by the highest amount of rainfall and rainy days. Winters, conversely, are cool, with average temperatures around 5-6°C in January and December, making it the driest time of the year. Spring and autumn offer more moderate temperatures, making these seasons particularly pleasant for visiting: spring brings gradual warming and increased humidity, while autumn delights with warm and drier weather.
Overall, the weather in Huangshan offers variety: from cool and relatively dry winters to hot and humid summers with a pronounced peak in rainfall at the beginning of the summer season. Spring and autumn serve as transitional periods with comfortable temperatures and moderate rainfall, making them a popular choice for many travellers.
Temperature
The temperature pattern in Huangshan demonstrates a distinct change of seasons with a noticeable annual range. The average annual temperature varies from a cool 5.3°C in January to a hot 28.4°C in August. The coldest months are January (average temperature 5.3°C, minimum 1.7°C, maximum 8.8°C) and December (average temperature 6.1°C, minimum 2.2°C, maximum 10.1°C). Conversely, the peak heat falls on July and August, when average temperatures reach 28.1°C and 28.4°C respectively, and maximum daily values can rise above 31-32°C.
The summer months in Huangshan, especially July and August, are characterised by hot weather. In July, the average temperature is 28.1°C, with daily highs around 31.7°C and nightly lows not dropping below 24.5°C. August is the warmest month: the average temperature rises to 28.4°C, maximum values reach 32.3°C, and minimums remain at 24.5°C. June precedes the peak summer heat with an average temperature of 24.3°C (from 21.1°C at night to 27.4°C during the day), but it is also the month with the highest rainfall, which can add a sense of humidity to the warm weather.
Winter in Huangshan is cool, but usually without severe frosts. In January, the coldest month, the average temperature holds at 5.3°C, with night temperatures potentially dropping to 1.7°C and day temperatures rising to 8.8°C. December and February are also cool, with average temperatures of 6.1°C and 6.7°C respectively. Minimum temperatures in these months are 2.2°C in December and 3.3°C in February, with maximums around 10°C. Throughout the year, moderate temperature fluctuations between day and night are observed, usually within the range of 6-8°C, which is worth considering when planning your travel wardrobe.
Precipitation
Huangshan sees pronounced seasonality in precipitation distribution throughout the year. The wettest month is June, when an average of 14 mm of precipitation falls, and the number of rainy days reaches 21. This month marks the peak of the rainy season. On the other hand, the driest month is considered to be October, with a minimum rainfall of just 1 mm and only about 7 rainy days.
The period with the highest rainfall occurs in late spring and the first half of summer, covering the months from May to July. In May, about 7 mm of precipitation falls over 17 rainy days, and in July, it is also 7 mm, but over 18 rainy days. June, as already mentioned, is the culmination of this wet season. The nature of precipitation at this time tends to be frequent rains, which can range from moderate rain to short downpours, ensuring consistently high humidity.
Autumn and early winter in Huangshan are a noticeably drier period. After the peak in June, rainfall gradually decreases: in August it is 4 mm (15 rainy days), in September – 3 mm (10 rainy days). October and November (2 mm, 9 rainy days) are the driest months. Winter months, such as December (2 mm, 8 rainy days) and January (3 mm, 12 rainy days), are also characterised by low total precipitation. Although the number of "wet days" in winter may be higher than in the driest month of October, this likely indicates the presence of light, perhaps drizzling rains, rather than heavy precipitation. Given the average monthly temperatures, precipitation in winter in Huangshan falls predominantly as rain.
What to Pack
When planning a trip to Huangshan, it is important to choose your wardrobe correctly, taking into account the distinct change of seasons and significant fluctuations in both temperature and rainfall levels. Regardless of the time of year, comfortable walking shoes are your main companion, as Huangshan is famous for its mountain trails. The principle of layering clothing will also always be relevant, allowing you to adapt to weather changes throughout the day, especially if you plan to hike in the mountains.
For the summer months (June-August), when average temperatures reach 28°C and above, and humidity is elevated—especially in rainy June (the wettest month)—pack light, breathable clothing made from natural fabrics. Do not forget sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses. Be sure to take a raincoat or umbrella. In spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November), the weather is more moderate. You will need items of medium weight: T-shirts, long-sleeved shirts, light jumpers or a fleece jacket, as well as a windbreaker or light jacket, especially for evening walks or cooler days. Autumn is the driest season, but light rain protection will still be useful, particularly in early autumn or November.
In winter (December-February), Huangshan is cool, with average temperatures hovering around 5-6°C, sometimes dropping lower. During this period, you will need warm clothing: jumpers, fleece jackets, insulated trousers, as well as a warm waterproof and windproof jacket, a hat, gloves, and a scarf. Winter in Huangshan is characterised by low rainfall compared to summer, but some precipitation is still possible, especially in the form of rain, so waterproof outerwear will be handy. Considering that even in the driest autumn months there are several "wet days", a compact umbrella or raincoat can be useful at any time of the year.
