General Weather Overview

The climate in Jiaxing is characterised as temperate, with four distinctly defined seasons. Travellers can expect significant weather changes throughout the year, making each season unique for visiting.

Summer in Jiaxing, spanning the period from June to August, is quite hot: average temperatures often rise above 25°C, and in July and August can approach 30°C. June stands out as the month with the highest amount of rainfall (10 mm) and the largest number of rainy days (17 days), indicating a wetter period. Winters, from December to February, are cool, with average temperatures around 5-7°C, and generally drier than the summer months, with the least amount of precipitation in October, November, and December (2 mm).

Spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November) are pleasant transitional seasons. Spring brings gradual warming, while autumn brings a comfortable drop in temperatures after the summer heat and is characterised by less rainfall, especially in October and November, creating favourable conditions for walking and exploring the city.

Temperature

The temperature regime in Jiaxing demonstrates distinct seasonality, offering travellers diverse weather conditions throughout the year. The annual temperature course covers a significant range: from cool winter lows to hot summer highs. The coldest month is usually January, with an average temperature of about 5.5°C; at this time, night temperatures can drop on average to 2.1°C. Conversely, the peak heat occurs in July and August, when average daytime temperatures reach 29.6°C and 29.8°C respectively, and daytime highs regularly rise above the 32°C mark.

Summer months in Jiaxing, especially July and August, are characterised as hot and quite humid. Daytime air temperature during this period often reaches 32-33°C, and nights remain very warm, with minimum thermometer readings around 26-27°C. This creates a sensation of constant heat load, which may seem intense. June, preceding the peak of summer, is also warm, with an average temperature of 25.3°C and maximum daytime values up to 28°C. High humidity, characteristic of the summer season, further intensifies the perception of heat.

Winter in Jiaxing is distinguished by cool weather, however, severe frosts are rare here. In the coldest months, from December to February, average maximum daytime temperatures fluctuate between 8.9°C (in January) and 10.5°C (in December), which is quite suitable for sightseeing given appropriate clothing. At night, the temperature can drop significantly lower: average minimum values range from 2.1°C (in January) to 3.8°C (in February). This means that light frosts are possible, but stable snow cover or severe frosts are not characteristic of the region. Daily temperature fluctuations in winter are somewhat more pronounced than in summer: the difference between the daytime maximum and night minimum in winter months averages about 6-7°C.

Precipitation

Precipitation distribution in Jiaxing has a clearly defined annual pattern, with a noticeable contrast between the wet summer period and the drier autumn-winter months. Given the prevailing temperature regime, practically all precipitation throughout the year falls as rain.

The summer season brings the greatest amount of moisture to Jiaxing. June leads in this indicator: on average, 10 mm of precipitation falls per month, and the number of rainy days reaches 17. July also remains quite wet with 6 mm of precipitation and approximately 16 rainy days. In general, the period from May (4 mm, 12 days) to September (5 mm, 14 days) is characterised by an increased probability of rain, which can be quite intense in summer, especially in the first half of the season.

On the other hand, late autumn and early winter bring the driest weather to Jiaxing. In October, November, and December, average monthly precipitation drops to a minimum of 2 mm. The number of days with precipitation in these months is also minimal, amounting to only 7-8 days, making this period the most predictable for those who prefer dry weather. Even in other cool months, such as January (3 mm, 10 rainy days) and February (3 mm, 12 days), precipitation does occur, but usually bears a less intense character, possibly in the form of drizzle or light rain.

What to Pack

When planning a trip to Jiaxing, it is important to consider the distinct change of seasons, which directly affects wardrobe choices. Regardless of the time of year, comfortable footwear for walking will be your best companion, as the city invites exploration on foot. Since the weather in China can be changeable, especially in the off-season in cities like Jiaxing, the principle of layering clothes is an excellent strategy. This will allow you to easily adapt to temperature changes throughout the day.

For a visit to Jiaxing in the warm months, roughly from May to September, when daytime temperatures often rise above 25°C, and in July-August can reach 32-33°C, pack light and breathable clothing. Cotton or linen items, t-shirts, shorts, light dresses, and trousers will be most comfortable. Summer, especially June, is characterised not only by heat but also by the highest amount of rainfall (up to 17 rainy days), so an umbrella or a light raincoat is absolutely necessary. Do not forget sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses for protection against the active sun.

If your trip falls during the cooler period, from late autumn to early spring (October-April), when average temperatures range from 5°C to 18°C, and can drop even lower at night, the main focus should be on warm clothing. Sweaters, fleece tops, warm trousers, a jacket (in winter — insulated, possibly windproof), a hat, a scarf, and gloves will help you feel comfortable. Although autumn and winter months, especially October, November, and December, are considered drier (only about 7-8 rainy days), a compact umbrella or waterproof outerwear may still come in handy. The principle of layering will also be your faithful ally here, allowing you to easily regulate the degree of warmth depending on the weather.
