General Weather Overview

The climate of Wuxi can be described as humid subtropical, with four clearly defined seasons. The city offers diverse weather conditions throughout the year, allowing you to choose the most comfortable time to visit depending on your preferences. Overall, the weather here is distinguished by noticeable temperature fluctuations between winter and summer.

Winters in Wuxi are cool and relatively dry, with average temperatures around 4-6°C in January and December. Spring brings gradual warming, and by May the average temperature reaches a comfortable 21.8°C. Summer, especially from June to August, is hot and humid, with average temperatures rising to 29.5°C in August, which is also the rainiest period. In autumn, the weather becomes milder and drier, with average temperatures ranging from 25°C in September to 13.6°C in November, creating pleasant conditions for travel.

The most notable feature of Wuxi's climate is the summer rainy season, which is most pronounced in June and July, when the highest amount of rainfall occurs (8 mm and 7 mm respectively) and the highest number of rainy days is observed (14-16 days). During the rest of the year, precipitation is moderate, with the lowest amounts in December (1 mm) and October-November (2 mm).

Temperature

The temperature regime in Wuxi is characterized by distinct seasonal changes, offering visitors diverse weather conditions throughout the year. The annual temperature progression demonstrates a significant range: from cool winter months to hot summers. The sweltering month is typically August, when the average temperature reaches 29.5°C, and daytime highs can rise to 32.3°C. In turn, January is the coldest month, with an average temperature of 4.6°C and nighttime lows dropping to an average of 1.5°C.

The summer months in Wuxi, from June to August, are distinguished by persistent heat. In June, the average temperature is 25.5°C (with lows around 22.5°C and highs up to 28.5°C). The heat intensifies in July, when the average temperature rises to 29.3°C, and daytime heat can reach 31.9°C, while nights remain very warm with temperatures around 26.8°C. August continues this trend, being the hottest month with maximum temperatures up to 32.3°C and average nighttime temperatures at 26.7°C. During this period, even the nights bring only slight relief from the daytime heat.

Winter in Wuxi, covering December, January, and February, brings significant cooling. In December, the average temperature holds at 6.0°C, with nighttime frosts down to 2.5°C and daytime temperatures around 9.5°C. January, the coldest month, is characterized by average values of 4.6°C, while nighttime temperatures can drop to 1.5°C, and daytime temperatures rarely exceed 7.8°C. February brings a slight warming with an average temperature of 6.4°C (minimum 3.2°C, maximum 9.6°C). Moderate diurnal temperature fluctuations are observed throughout the year, usually within 5-7°C, meaning the difference between daytime warmth and nighttime coolness is perceptible, especially during the winter period and the off-season.

Precipitation

Precipitation in Wuxi is distributed unevenly throughout the year, with a clearly defined wet season that falls predominantly during the summer months. While the city receives precipitation year-round, its intensity and frequency vary notably, creating periods of high humidity and drier intervals.

The wettest period in Wuxi is observed in summer. June stands out as the month with the highest average rainfall, reaching 8 mm, with rain falling on average for 14 days. It is immediately followed by July, which, although receiving slightly less rainfall (7 mm), is characterized by the highest number of rainy days in the year — about 16 days. August also remains quite wet with 14 rainy days and 4 mm of rainfall. May acts as a precursor to the main rainy season, when rainfall increases to 4 mm and the number of rainy days reaches 11. Summer precipitation usually comes in the form of rains that can be quite intense.

On the other hand, the driest month in Wuxi is December. During this period, only about 1 mm of precipitation falls, and the number of days with precipitation is minimal, amounting to roughly 6. Late autumn is also distinguished by relative dryness: in October and November, 2 mm of precipitation is recorded each month, and the number of rainy days is 7 and 8 respectively. Winter months, including January (2 mm of rainfall, 9 rainy days), are also characterized by significantly lower amounts of precipitation compared to the summer peak. During these cooler periods, precipitation usually falls as light rain or drizzle.

What to Pack

When planning a trip to Wuxi, it is important to consider its distinct seasonality so that your wardrobe matches the weather conditions. Regardless of the time of year, comfortable walking shoes are your main companion, as the city is conducive to walking. The principle of layering clothes will also be very useful, especially during transitional seasons when the temperature can change noticeably throughout the day. Don't forget an electronics adapter if one is needed for your devices.

In winter (from December to February), Wuxi is quite cool, with average temperatures ranging from 4°C to 6°C, and nighttime temperatures can drop to 1.5°C. You will need warm clothes: sweaters, fleece jackets, a warm jacket or coat, a hat, a scarf, and gloves. Although there is little precipitation at this time, a small umbrella or waterproof jacket may come in handy. Spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November) are transitional periods with moderate temperatures. It gets warmer in spring (from 12°C to 22°C) and cooler in autumn (from 25°C to 13°C). Ideally, you should pack a light jacket, jumpers, cardigans, and closed shoes for these times. An umbrella remains relevant, as rainy days do occur.

Summer in Wuxi (June-August) is hot and humid, with average temperatures from 25°C to nearly 30°C, and highs can exceed 32°C. This is also the rainiest season, especially in June and July. Therefore, your luggage must include light, breathable clothing made of natural fabrics (cotton, linen), shorts, t-shirts, and sandals. Sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses are essential attributes for sun protection. And, of course, a reliable umbrella or raincoat will become your faithful companions during this period of frequent and sometimes intense rains.
