Weather Overview

Zhenjiang, located in China, is characterized by a humid subtropical climate, which means there are four distinct seasons. The weather here changes throughout the year, offering diverse conditions for travellers, from cool winters to hot and humid summers.

The summer months, from June to August, in Zhenjiang are hot and humid, with average temperatures ranging from 25.5°C to 28.8°C, and maximums can exceed 30°C. July stands out as the wettest month with the highest number of rainy days, although the total rainfall remains moderate. Winters, from December to February, are quite cool, with average temperatures around 3.8°C - 5.6°C, and night temperatures that can drop below freezing. Spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November) are pleasant transitional seasons with comfortable temperatures and less rainfall compared to summer.

Overall, Zhenjiang's climate offers varied weather conditions. Although the summer period brings more precipitation and high humidity, the city does not experience extreme monsoon downpours. The driest months fall in late autumn and winter, which is worth considering when planning a trip depending on your weather preferences.

Temperature

Zhenjiang's climate demonstrates a clear change of seasons with notable temperature fluctuations throughout the year. The coldest month is usually January, when the average temperature holds at 3.8°C, and nightly lows can drop to -0.2°C. Daily highs in January rarely exceed 7.7°C. Conversely, the peak heat occurs in August, with an average temperature of 28.8°C, daily highs reaching 32.0°C, and night temperatures remaining high at around 25.5°C.

Summer months in Zhenjiang, from June to August, are characterized as hot and quite humid. Average daily temperatures during this period consistently exceed 25°C. In June, the average temperature is 25.5°C (from 21.8°C at night to 29.2°C during the day). July and August are the sultriest, with average temperatures of 28.7°C and 28.8°C respectively. During the day, the air warms up to 31-32°C, and nights remain very warm, with temperatures rarely dropping below 25°C, which can create a feeling of stuffiness, especially combined with the high humidity characteristic of this season.

Winter in Zhenjiang, covering December, January, and February, brings cool weather. Average temperatures range from 3.8°C in January to 5.6°C in February. Daily highs in winter months are usually in the range of 7.7°C - 9.6°C, while night temperatures regularly drop to values around 0°C or even slightly lower, especially in January (-0.2°C). Moderate diurnal temperature fluctuations are observed throughout the year, usually within 6-9°C between daily highs and nightly lows, which is more pronounced in the transitional seasons of spring and autumn, offering milder and more comfortable temperature conditions.

Precipitation

In Zhenjiang, distinct seasonality is observed in rainfall distribution throughout the year. The wettest period is summer, peaking in July. In this month, about 8 mm of precipitation falls on average, and the number of rainy days reaches 18, making it the rainiest month. June is also quite wet with 6 mm of precipitation and 12 rainy days, while August brings about 5 mm of precipitation and 15 days with rain. Thus, summer months are characterized by the highest probability of precipitation.

Conversely, the driest months in Zhenjiang are November and December. In each of these months, only 1 mm of precipitation falls, and there are only about 6 rainy days. This indicates that late autumn and early winter represent the most arid season. Transitional periods – spring and early autumn – demonstrate a moderate amount of precipitation. For example, from January to April, rainfall consistently holds at 2 mm per month with 9-10 rainy days, in May it increases to 4 mm (10 rainy days), and in September it is 3 mm with 11 rainy days.

The nature of precipitation also changes depending on the season. Summer rainfall, especially in July, is distinguished by high frequency – it rains on more than half the days of the month. However, given the total amount of precipitation (e.g., 8 mm in July), these are likely short or not very intense rains rather than prolonged downpours. In winter, especially in January, when the average minimum temperature drops to -0.2°C, a small amount of precipitation (2 mm) could theoretically fall as light snow or sleet. Nevertheless, given the small volume, the prevailing form of precipitation likely remains light rain or drizzle. In November, December, and February, when minimum temperatures are usually above freezing, precipitation is also low (1-2 mm) and falls predominantly as rain.

What to Pack

When planning a trip to Zhenjiang, it is important to consider its distinct change of seasons. Regardless of the time of year, comfortable walking shoes will be your best companion, as the city is conducive to walking. It is also recommended to take an umbrella or a light raincoat, since even in months with low total rainfall, rainy days are not uncommon. The principle of layering clothing will be especially relevant, allowing you to easily adapt to temperature changes throughout the day, characteristic of transitional seasons.

In summer, from June to August, hot and humid weather settles in Zhenjiang. Pack light, breathable clothing made from natural fabrics, such as T-shirts, shorts, skirts, and sundresses. Do not forget sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses to protect against the active sun. July is the rainiest month, so waterproof shoes or a spare pair may come in handy. In winter, from December to February, the weather becomes cool. You will need a warm sweater, a jacket (possibly windproof), trousers, as well as a hat, scarf, and gloves, especially for January when night temperatures can drop below freezing. Although precipitation in winter is minimal, warm clothing is necessary.

Spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November) in Zhenjiang boast the most comfortable weather. For these seasons, a layered wardrobe is ideal: T-shirts, long-sleeved shirts, light sweaters or a fleece jacket, as well as a medium-weight jacket. This will allow you to easily adjust to the temperature, which can be cool in the morning and evening but pleasant during the day. Regardless of the season, do not forget an electronics adapter if it differs from the one used in your country, and a small first aid kit with necessary medications.
