Dongtai, located in Jiangsu Province on the east coast of China, has a pronounced humid subtropical climate. The weather here is shaped by monsoons, providing a clear change of four seasons: from a bracingly cool winter to a hot and humid summer.

The region is characterized by a distinct rainy season during the summer months and relatively dry periods in winter and early spring. The hot season lasts almost five months — from May to September — when the thermometer regularly passes the 30°C mark. During this time, the city is enveloped in tropical humidity, creating a specific coastal eastern atmosphere.

Autumn in the city is considered one of the most pleasant periods to visit: the exhausting heat subsides, replaced by mild and sunny weather. Spring, on the other hand, can be quite temperamental with frequent temperature fluctuations; however, this is when the city's nature begins to awaken rapidly.

Dongtai's temperature calendar shows impressive variety. The coldest period occurs in January, when the average minimum drops to -0.8°C, and daytime temperatures hover around +7.7°C. Winter here is cool and windy, which should be considered when planning long excursions through China.

Summer in the city is characterized by steady heat. In July and August, the average temperature reaches +28.3°C, and daytime highs often exceed +31°C. Due to the proximity to the sea and high humidity, the heat can feel more intense than instrument readings suggest, creating a "sauna" effect.

Transitional seasons in Dongtai pass quite quickly. In spring, the air warms up rapidly: while the average temperature in March is about +10.8°C, by May it already reaches a comfortable +20.8°C. In autumn, the process is reversed — the pleasant warmth of September (+23.9°C) is gradually replaced by the brisk freshness of November. Diurnal temperature variations are most noticeable in summer, when the difference between daytime heat and nighttime coolness can reach up to 15 degrees.

Dongtai receives significant precipitation, reaching over 1100–1200 mm per year, with its distribution heavily dependent on the season. The wettest period occurs from May to August. July is recognized as the rainiest month: during this time, about 230 mm of precipitation falls, and the number of rainy days can reach 18. Summer precipitation often takes the form of intense downpours, typical of China's monsoon climate.

Winter months, conversely, please tourists with relative dryness. December is considered the "driest" time of year — precipitation drops to a minimum of 30 mm, and it rains on average only 5 days a month. Snow in this region is extremely rare and usually doesn't last more than a couple of days, making winter walks quite comfortable provided you have warm clothing.

In autumn, humidity gradually decreases, and although September can still bring echoes of summer monsoons or the influence of typhoons, October and November are known for their stability. Spring is a transitional stage when the number of rainy days begins to grow slowly, preparing the city for a wet summer.

When preparing for a trip to Dongtai, it's important to consider the season and the region's high humidity. For a winter trip (December–February), you'll need warm clothing: a jacket, sweaters, and closed shoes, as even slightly positive temperatures feel quite cold in high humidity. In spring and autumn, it's best to follow the layering principle, combining t-shirts with light jackets or cardigans that are easy to remove during the day.

If your trip falls in the summer (June–August), choose lightweight clothing made of natural, breathable fabrics. Sunscreen, glasses, and a hat are essential items to help cope with solar activity. A compact umbrella will be your faithful companion during this period, protecting you from both sudden downpours and the scorching sun.

Pay special attention to comfortable footwear. The city and its surroundings are great for long walks, so a pair of reliable sneakers or quick-drying sandals will be indispensable.
