The climate in Kaiyuan is humid continental with distinct seasonal variations typical of northeastern China. Travelers can expect significant temperature contrasts: frosty, sunny winters give way to a brief spring, followed by fairly hot and humid summers.

The main feature of the local weather is the clear division between seasons. The warm period lasts about three and a half months, beginning in late March. During this time, nature awakens quickly, and the air warms to comfortable levels. The winter months offer plenty of clear days, although they require serious preparation for low temperatures and wind.

The temperature in Kaiyuan features a wide annual range, typical of the northeastern provinces. January is traditionally the coldest month, with average temperatures dropping to -14.7°C, and night-time lows reaching a harsh -22°C. Winters here are long and freezing, but due to the low humidity, the cold feels dry.

Summer heat peaks in July, when the average daily temperature is around +25.4°C, and daytime highs regularly exceed +29°C. One of the region's key climatic features is the significant daily fluctuation: the difference between day and night temperatures can range from 10°C to 15°C, and during transitional periods like November, these swings are especially noticeable.

Precipitation in Kaiyuan is distributed very unevenly throughout the year, typical of monsoonal influence. Most moisture falls during the summer rainy season, which spans from June to August. July is the "wettest" month of the year, with about 172 mm of rainfall, and the number of rainy days can reach fourteen.

In contrast, the winter period is exceptionally dry. From December to February, precipitation is rare and occurs mainly as light snow. Clear days prevail during this time: for example, December and January average 28–29 dry days, making winter walks visually pleasant despite the cold.

Spring and autumn are considered moderately dry. In March and April, rainfall begins to gradually increase, preparing the soil for the summer bloom, though prolonged downpours are rare during this time. September also brings a significant amount of moisture (about 93 mm), followed by the dry transition into autumn and winter.

When packing for Kaiyuan, it's important to consider the sharp seasonal shifts and daily temperature swings. For a summer trip (June–August), lightweight clothing made from natural fabrics, shorts, and T-shirts are ideal, but be sure to bring an umbrella or a high-quality raincoat—downpours can be heavy during this time. Don't forget sunscreen and sunglasses, as the sun shines very brightly on clear days.

If your trip is planned for winter, layering is key. You will definitely need warm thermal underwear, a high-quality down jacket to protect against the cold wind, as well as a hat, thick gloves, and a scarf. Non-slip shoes with thick soles are best for walking around the city and its surroundings.

During the shoulder seasons (spring and autumn), it's best to have a combination of jeans, sweaters, and a windbreaker. Since daily temperature fluctuations in China can reach 20°C, the ability to easily add or remove layers will ensure maximum comfort throughout your sightseeing day.
