Hôtel Pams

About

Hidden behind a modest facade in the historical center, Hôtel Pams is one of the most brilliant architectural treasures held by Perpignan. Despite its name, it is not a hotel, but a magnificent private mansion from the late 19th century, which has become a true hymn to the Art Nouveau style in France.

The building served as a home for a wealthy family of industrialists and still retains the spirit of the "Belle Époque." The mansion's interiors are breathtaking: from the monumental staircase with elegant paintings to the grand state rooms, where every detail — from the door handle to the moldings — is executed with impeccable taste.

Today, this historical monument belongs to the city and is open to everyone. It serves as a cultural center, where the luxury of the past meets contemporary art, offering visitors a unique opportunity to see the life of the French elite of that time from the inside.

What to Do

The main reason to come here is the breathtaking interiors. Be sure to notice the central staircase, decorated with large-scale canvases by the artist Gervais. The flowing lines of the railings, the abundance of gilding, and the light create the feeling of a theatrical set where you play the leading role.

Stroll through the state rooms on the second floor, where the original finishes have been preserved: exquisite stained glass, paintings depicting nymphs, and floral ornaments typical of the Modern (Art Nouveau) style. Each room here tells its own story of luxury and comfort at the turn of the century.

A special charm is added to Hôtel Pams by its inner courtyard patio. This quiet sanctuary with a fountain, flowers, and elegant galleries is an ideal place to relax. Additionally, the mansion often hosts contemporary art exhibitions, allowing you to see an interesting blend of historical heritage and modern creativity.

Getting There

Finding Hôtel Pams is easy, as it is located at 18 Rue Emile Zola right in the city center. If you are already in the historical district, the best way to get there is a leisurely walk — this will allow you to enjoy the charm of the old streets and reach the mansion gates without any rush.

For those planning a trip from more distant areas, it is convenient to use public transport or a taxi, which will take you to the edge of the pedestrian zone. Keep in mind that the streets in this part of the city are quite narrow, so driving a car can be difficult.

Travelers in personal vehicles are advised to leave their cars in municipal parking lots located around the perimeter of the historical center. From there, you can reach the mansion in just a few minutes by following signs to the main cultural sites.

History & Facts

The history of this magnificent building is inextricably linked to the wealth of the Bardou family. Pierre Bardou, whose father founded the famous JOB cigarette paper company, purchased the first house on Rue Emile Zola in 1852. Over time, he expanded the estate, turning it into a combination of living quarters and workshops with characteristic glass roofs.

The true transformation of the mansion began after 1892, when it passed to Pierre's son-in-law, the politician Jules Pams. It was he who invited the renowned architect Léopold Carlier to turn the house into a genuine Art Nouveau masterpiece. It was during this period that the monumental staircase and the luxurious halls we see today were created.

In 1946, Marguerite Pams, Jules's second wife, sold the building to the city. Since then, it has been municipal property. Today, Hôtel Pams is not just an architectural monument but a living testimony to the Belle Époque, carefully preserved by the authorities for future generations.

Time Needed

For a first acquaintance with the mansion's interiors, 30–60 minutes is usually enough. This time is sufficient to climb the famous staircase, look into the main halls, and take memorable photos in the inner courtyard.

However, for connoisseurs of art and architecture, we recommend setting aside about 2 hours. This will allow you to leisurely examine the Art Nouveau decorative details, explore temporary art exhibitions, and simply sit in the quiet of the patio, enjoying the atmosphere of a bygone era.
