How to get to Iki

A journey to Iki offers the opportunity to discover a unique island destination in Japan, situated in the waters of the Tsushima Strait. Reaching this picturesque location is possible through various means, combining air and sea transport via the region's key hubs. The island attracts tourists with its historical sanctuaries, pristine nature, and authentic atmosphere, offering a peaceful retreat far from the bustle of major metropolises.

Contrary to popular belief, the island is served by its own airport, Iki Airport (IKI), which handles domestic flights, primarily from the city of Nagasaki. This is the fastest way to reach the destination, bypassing the sea crossing, although the number of flights may be limited.

For most international travellers, it is most convenient to fly via the major aviation hub in the city of Fukuoka (FUK), located approximately 68 km away. Fukuoka Airport has an extensive route network, and upon arrival, tourists can easily reach the port to transfer to a ferry bound for Iki.

There is no direct railway connection to the city of Iki, as the island's infrastructure is not connected to the mainland train network. Tourists are advised to use trains to reach major transport hubs on the island of Kyushu.

The optimal option is to take the Shinkansen bullet train or an express train to Hakata Station in the city of Fukuoka. From the railway station, you can quickly reach the ferry terminal by bus or taxi to continue your journey to the island by sea.

Direct intercity bus services straight to Iki from the "mainland" do not exist due to its geographical location. Bus services play the role of a connecting link to transport tourists to the ferry departure ports.

The most convenient route involves taking a bus to the ferry terminals in the city of Fukuoka or neighbouring coastal cities. Local buses operate within the island itself, though it is worth checking their schedules in advance.

Travelling by car to Iki requires the mandatory use of a car ferry. A popular route runs through the city of Fukuoka: although the distance to the port is about 77 km, and the pure driving time may take 1.7 hours, it is necessary to allocate additional time (usually 1–2 hours) for the sea crossing itself.

There is also the possibility of arriving from the side of Tsushima island (a distance of about 81 km) by using the corresponding ferry. When planning a trip by car, be sure to book a space for your vehicle on the vessel in advance, especially during the high season.

1. Clothing and Essentials. The weather on the island can be windy. It is recommended to bring a windbreaker and comfortable footwear for walking across rugged terrain and the coast.
2. Transport. Public transport runs infrequently. For complete freedom of movement and to visit remote landmarks, it is better to rent a car or an electric bicycle.
3. Finances. In small shops and restaurants, cards may not be accepted. Be sure to carry a sufficient supply of cash yen.
4. Health and Safety. The island is safe, but there are few pharmacies. Bring a basic medical kit and motion sickness remedies for the ferry crossing.
5. Communication. English proficiency among locals may be limited. Install an offline translator from Japanese on your phone.
6. Local Etiquette. Always remove your shoes when entering temples and traditional inns (ryokans). Show respect for silence and local traditions.
7. What to Avoid. Do not leave tips — in Japan, this is not customary and may be perceived as an insult or a mistake.
