The central theme of the exposition is "Miyabi"—the Japanese ideal of elegance. Here, in the heart of Tokyo, visitors can see how exotic fish become part of living artistic canvases. Japan has always been famous for its ability to harmoniously combine nature and technology, and this museum is another confirmation of the mastery of the local designers who worked on the concept for more than three decades.

This place is ideal for those seeking an unusual cultural experience. Instead of traditional glass tanks, you will find installations inspired by the legends and traditions of the Land of the Rising Sun, turning every visit into a meditative journey through the depths of imagination.

What to Do

Inside the aquarium, guests will find a journey through five unique themed zones, each of which stimulates all the senses at once. Begin your exploration with the WABISABI and OIRAN zones, where Japanese modesty meets dazzling glamour. The OIRAN zone is considered one of the most striking, featuring an elegant design inspired by the imagery of old Japan.

Special attention should be paid to the YURAKU interactive zone, where modern technology offers a new perspective on the traditional Japanese game of goldfish scooping. Here, the space changes according to the four seasons, creating a sense of the continuous movement of life. For fans of visual effects, the MANGEKYO zone offers a play of mirrors and light, turning the movement of bubbles and fish fins into kaleidoscopic patterns.

Many visitors name the RYUGU zone as their favorite location. Decorated with many colorful lanterns, it transports guests into the atmosphere of an underwater palace from ancient legends. Don't forget to notice the sound design and even the scents—at UWS AQUARIUM GA☆KYO, every detail works to create a complete artistic image, making your visit unforgettable even on the hottest summer day thanks to the cool and comfortable indoor environment.

Getting There

Getting to UWS AQUARIUM GA☆KYO is an adventure in itself, as it is located on the famous artificial island of Odaiba, connected to central Tokyo by the majestic Rainbow Bridge. The journey across the bay offers stunning panoramic views of the capital's futuristic skyline.

The most popular way to get there is by the automated Yurikamome line, getting off at Daiba or Odaiba-kaihinkōen stations, which are just a few minutes' walk from the Aqua City shopping center. You can also use the Rinkai line (Odaiba-kaihinkōen station). If you prefer more comfort, a taxi from the city center will take you directly to the complex in 15–20 minutes, depending on traffic.

For those who enjoy water travel, it is possible to arrive on the island by water bus, adding a special touch of romance to your trip. The well-developed transport infrastructure of the area makes visiting the aquarium convenient for tourists on any itinerary.

History & Facts

Although UWS AQUARIUM GA☆KYO opened relatively recently in July 2022, its concept was nurtured by its creators for over 30 years. It is not just a fish exhibition, but the result of long-term work on how to combine deep Japanese traditions with modern exhibition technologies.

The history of the location itself is also fascinating. In the 19th century, Odaiba was a series of forts (the name itself translates as "battery") built to protect Tokyo. Over time, these fortifications lost their original purpose, and in the second half of the 20th century, a massive urban renovation project was launched on the site of former landfills and port warehouses.

In the 1990s, the district transformed into one of the city's most avant-garde leisure centers. Today, when you enter the ultra-modern Aqua City mall to see goldfish glowing under neon lights, you are actually standing on ground that was once a defensive frontier of samurai-era Japan. The transformation of a historical fortress into an art cluster is one of the most remarkable examples of Japanese urban planning.

Time Needed

To leisurely immerse yourself in the atmosphere of each of the five themed zones and carefully examine the details of the installations, visitors usually need about 1.5 to 2 hours. This is enough time to enjoy the visual effects, listen to the soundscape, and try the interactive entertainment.

If you plan to take many photos (and the space is very photogenic) or decide to linger in the interactive goldfish-catching area, it is worth allowing a bit more time. Given the facility's location inside a large shopping center, a visit to the aquarium can be easily integrated into a general plan for exploring Odaiba.

Working Hours

UWS AQUARIUM GA☆KYO welcomes visitors daily, although the schedule varies slightly depending on the day of the week. From Monday to Friday, the doors are open from 11:00 AM to 8:00 PM. On weekends and holidays, the hours are extended by one hour—from 11:00 AM to 9:00 PM—allowing guests to enjoy the light installations in the evening.
