General Weather Overview
The climate of Ibadan can be described as tropical, with a clear division into dry and wet seasons. The city is characterized by consistently high temperatures throughout the year, so it is practically never cold here. Travellers should expect warm and often hot weather: average temperature indicators rarely drop below +25°C even in the "coolest" months.
Throughout the year, the weather shifts from arid to very humid. The dry season, which lasts from November to February, is characterized by minimal rainfall and an abundance of sunny days. This is the hottest time of the year, when in February and March daytime temperatures can reach +35°C and above. This is an excellent period for those who love the heat and plan to spend a lot of time outdoors without the risk of getting soaked.
From April to October, the rainy season reigns in Ibadan. The peak of precipitation falls on the summer and early autumn: in June, July, and September, the number of rainy days can reach 25–28 per month. Interestingly, it is during the height of the rainy season (July-August) that the lowest average temperatures of the year are observed, bringing relative freshness despite the high humidity.
Temperature
The climate of Ibadan is distinguished by stable warmth throughout the year, although the temperature regime has its seasonal features. The hottest period here is the end of winter and the beginning of spring. Already in February, the average temperature reaches its annual maximum of 30.1°C, and during the day the thermometer often rises to 36.0°C. Until April, the weather remains sweltering, which should be taken into account by travellers who do not tolerate heat well.
Calendar summer, on the contrary, brings relative coolness to the city, associated with cloud cover and precipitation. From June to September, thermometer readings decrease: August is considered the "coldest" month with an average temperature of about 25.2°C and comfortable daily highs around 28°C. This time of year is characterized by milder weather, when the extreme heat recedes.
The winter months, December and January, are dry and sunny in Ibadan, but it is during this period that the most noticeable daily temperature fluctuations are observed. While during the day the air warms up to 34-35°C, at night it can cool down to 22.6°C. Such contrast offers pleasant freshness after sunset, whereas in the summer months the difference between day and night temperatures becomes minimal.
Precipitation
The climate in Ibadan is characterized by a pronounced division into dry and wet seasons, which is typical for this part of Nigeria. If you are planning a trip and want to avoid precipitation, the winter months will be the ideal time. December and January are the driest periods of the year: according to statistics, rainfall at this time tends to zero, and the probability of rain is minimal — only about 2 rainy days per month.
The rainy season begins to gradually take hold in March, when the number of days with precipitation increases to 16, and continues right up to October. The wettest period can be called mid-summer and early autumn. The peak frequency of precipitation falls on July, when up to 28 rainy days are recorded. In June, August, and September, it also rains very often — from 25 to 27 days a month, so an umbrella will become your main companion at this time.
Precipitation in Ibadan falls exclusively in the form of rain. Despite the high frequency of rains in the monsoon season (from May to October), their intensity can vary. By November, the rainy season declines sharply, the number of wet days decreases to 10, preparing the city for the dry and sunny winter period.
What to Pack
Ibadan welcomes travellers with a warm tropical climate all year round, so the basis of your wardrobe should be light items made of natural breathable fabrics, such as cotton or linen. Since the average air temperature holds steadily around +25°C...+30°C, and in the hot months (February and March) can reach +36°C, give preference to loose-fitting light-coloured clothing. Be sure to take a wide-brimmed hat and high-quality sunglasses to protect yourself from the active sun.
If your trip is planned for the period from April to October, it is worth preparing for the rainy season. At this time, especially from June to September, the number of rainy days can reach 25–28 per month. You will certainly need a compact sturdy umbrella and a light raincoat that is convenient to carry in a backpack. Shoes should be as comfortable as possible and, preferably, quick-drying or waterproof, to move around the city comfortably even after a downpour.
Despite the heat, for evening walks or trips in air-conditioned transport, it is recommended to take one light long-sleeved top or a windbreaker. Also, do not forget to put sunscreen with a high protection factor and insect repellents in your suitcase, which will be especially relevant in the wet season. For long walks around Ibadan, broken-in sandals with secure straps or breathable summer sneakers are perfect.
