Current Weather

Planning a visit to Sunchon? Here you will find the most up-to-date information on current weather conditions and detailed forecasts for your journey through North Korea.

Overview

The climate in Sunchon has a pronounced monsoonal character, typical of this region of North Korea. The city experiences four distinct seasons, each bringing its own unique colors to the landscape. Travelers can expect notable contrasts: from bracing winter cold to humid subtropical heat at the height of summer.

Winter in the city is quite dry and frosty, while summer is characterized by heavy rainfall and high humidity due to the influence of maritime air masses. The most comfortable times to visit are spring and autumn, when mild, moderate weather sets in—perfect for long walks and exploring the local architecture and natural landscapes of South Pyongan Province.

The overall weather pattern is favorable for tourism if you choose the right time for your trip. Thanks to its proximity to the coast, temperature extremes here are somewhat tempered compared to the country's inland mountainous regions, making the city's climate relatively stable within each season.

Temperature

The temperature regime in Sunchon is characterized by significant seasonal variations. The coldest time of year is January, when average nighttime temperatures drop to -11°C, and daytime highs barely reach -1°C. Winter air is usually dry and sharp, which can make the frost feel more intense.

With the arrival of summer, the situation changes drastically. July and August are the hottest months, with average daily highs reaching +28°C...+30°C. Due to monsoon humidity, the heat can feel more stifling, creating a greenhouse effect. At night, temperatures during this period rarely drop below +21°C.

During transitional seasons, such as April or October, the most pleasant temperatures are observed. The average temperature in April is around +11°C, and in October, it is about +12°C. However, keep in mind the significant daily fluctuations: warm sunny days can quickly give way to cold evenings, especially in early spring and late autumn.

Precipitation

Precipitation in Sunchon is distributed very unevenly and depends directly on the summer monsoon. The bulk of the moisture falls between June and August. August is the wettest month, with rainfall reaching an impressive 290 mm. During this time, it can rain for up to 19 days a month, often in the form of intense downpours.

The winter period in the city is considered dry. From December to February, precipitation is rare and occurs mainly as snow. January is the driest month, when the sky remains clear most of the time and the snow cover is only occasionally refreshed by light flurries.

Spring and autumn offer moderate rainfall (averaging 40–70 mm per month), creating a pleasant humidity balance. This time is characterized by variable cloudiness and is considered the best choice for those who want to avoid prolonged rain or the dry winter air.

Packing Tips

When packing for Sunchon, the best approach is layering, especially if your trip is planned for spring or autumn. During these periods, light sweaters, windbreakers, and jeans will keep you comfortable in daytime temperatures of around +15°C...+20°C and cooler evenings. Don't forget reliable and comfortable walking shoes, as sightseeing involves a lot of time on your feet.

For a summer trip (June–August), lightweight clothes made of natural fabrics, sunscreen, and a hat are essential. Given the peak of the monsoon season, a high-quality umbrella or a compact raincoat will be your indispensable companions. In winter, serious insulation is required: down jackets, thermal underwear, gloves, and scarves will help you handle the biting wind when temperatures drop well below zero.
