The climate of Wonsan has a distinct monsoon character, harmoniously combining mid-latitude features with the mild influence of the Sea of Japan. Located on the east coast of North Korea, the city is sheltered by mountains, which creates a unique microclimate with hot, humid summers and relatively dry, bracing winters.

The main feature of the local weather is the clear change of seasons. While spring and autumn delight tourists with mild weather and picturesque landscapes, the summer months bring the bulk of the rainfall and tropical warmth. Thanks to its location in a deep bay, the city is considered one of the most favorable places for recreation in the region, especially from June to September.

The temperature regime in Wonsan is characterized by significant annual fluctuations typical of the east coast of the Korean Peninsula. The coldest time of year is January, when the average temperature is around -4.8°C, and night frosts can reach -12°C. Winter here is invigorating, but thanks to the sea's influence, it is milder than in the country's inland regions.

Summer heat peaks in August, when the average air temperature rises to +23.8°C, and daytime highs often exceed +27°C. Due to high humidity in July and August, the heat can feel more intense; however, sea breezes in the Broughton Bay area bring a pleasant freshness in the evenings.

Spring and autumn in Wonsan are the periods of the most comfortable temperatures for active tourism. As early as May, the air warms up to a pleasant +15–20°C, and September delights with mild warmth around +19°C, allowing you to fully enjoy the beauty of the coastal landscapes without the exhausting heat or winter chill.

The distribution of precipitation in Wonsan is extremely uneven and directly depends on seasonal winds. The majority of the rain falls between July and August—these two months account for more than half of the annual moisture. Intense downpours are common during this time, bringing high humidity levels that can reach 96%.

In contrast, the winter months are exceptionally dry. January and December are the clearest times of year, when precipitation is minimal and rarely exceeds 30 mm per month. Snow in Wonsan is infrequent, and clear sunny days in winter are a common occurrence, making seaside walks bracing and pleasant.

The transitional seasons are characterized by moderate humidity. In May and June, the number of rainy days gradually increases, preparing nature for the arrival of the monsoon, while October and November treat travelers to predominantly dry and stable weather, ideal for exploring local attractions.

When planning a trip to Wonsan in the summer, be sure to bring light clothing made of natural, "breathable" fabrics to help you better handle the high humidity. Don't forget swimwear, sunscreen, and a hat for relaxing on the Kalma beaches. Given the monsoon nature of summer, a compact umbrella or a reliable raincoat should be in your backpack at all times.

For a winter visit, you will need a full warm wardrobe: an insulated jacket, sweaters, a scarf, and gloves, as temperatures can drop to -10°C. In the spring and autumn months, it is best to follow the layering principle. A combination of T-shirts, light jumpers, and windbreakers will allow you to feel comfortable during daytime warm-ups and evening chills.

In any season, a key element of your luggage should be comfortable shoes for walking along the coast and through park areas. In summer, it is also worth bringing insect repellent. Remember that coastal weather can be changeable, so a light windproof jacket will be useful even on the finest days.
