Kaesong

The climate of Kaesong can be described as temperate monsoonal with four distinct seasons. Located in the southern part of North Korea, the city delights travelers with a variety of natural colors: from delicate spring blossoms to snowy winter landscapes. Much of the region is covered by dense pine forests, which makes the air here especially fresh and creates pleasant conditions for long walks.

The summer months in this region are typically long, warm, and quite humid, while winter passes relatively quickly, bringing frosty and clear weather. The transitional seasons—spring and autumn—are considered the most comfortable for sightseeing due to mild temperatures and stable weather conditions, allowing visitors to fully enjoy the attractions.

The temperature patterns in Kaesong are characterized by significant seasonal variations. The coldest month is January, when average daytime highs hover around 2°C, and night frosts can drop to -7°C or lower. However, by March, the thermometer confidently rises above freezing, ushering in spring warmth that gradually heats the air to a comfortable 17°C by May.

Summers in the city are moderately hot and humid. Temperatures peak in August, when the air warms up to an average of 29°C during the day, while remaining pleasantly cool at around 22°C at night. It is worth noting that due to the proximity of large rivers, humidity can intensify the feeling of heat. In autumn, especially in October, the weather becomes mild and very comfortable, with daytime temperatures around 18–19°C, which is considered the golden time for travelers.

Precipitation in Kaesong is influenced by the East Asian monsoons, which is why most of the annual rainfall occurs between June and September. The wettest months are traditionally July and August, when heavy downpours can alternate with variable cloudiness. During this time, humidity levels reach their peak, which should be taken into account when planning active excursions.

In contrast, the winter period is characterized by relative dryness. Precipitation falls primarily as snow, most frequently in December and January. Although the snow cover is not always deep, the frosty air and clear skies create a classic northern winter atmosphere in the city. Spring and autumn offer moderate precipitation and plenty of sunny days, making these seasons ideal for visiting Kaesong.

When packing for a trip to Kaesong, focus on the principle of layering, especially if your journey is planned for spring or autumn. For a summer visit, light clothing made of natural, breathable fabrics is essential, but don't forget a reliable umbrella or raincoat—monsoon rains can start suddenly during this period. Given that the city is surrounded by forests, comfortable closed-toe shoes are a must for walking along nature trails.

In winter, you will need proper warm gear: a windproof jacket, a hat, gloves, and preferably thermal underwear, as the cold period here is quite long. Sunglasses and sunscreen are useful year-round, as the sun in this region can be quite strong. If you enjoy nature watching, bring compact binoculars—the area surrounding the city is home to many rare bird species.
