Overview

The climate in Incheon, located in South Korea, is characterized as temperate with four distinct seasons. Winters here are quite cold, with average temperatures dropping below freezing, especially in January, and relatively low precipitation. Spring brings a gradual warming, and by May, the weather becomes pleasant, although the number of rainy days begins to increase.

Summer in Incheon is warm and humid, with peak temperatures in July and August, when average values reach 25-26°C. Most of the annual precipitation falls during these summer months, indicating a pronounced rainy season where rainy days can exceed half the month. Autumn, by contrast, offers comfortable temperatures and decreasing precipitation, making September and October a pleasant time to visit. Overall, the weather in Incheon offers a variety of conditions throughout the year, which is worth considering when planning your trip.

Temperature

Incheon experiences a significant annual temperature cycle, reflecting the change of four seasons. The coldest month is traditionally January, when the average temperature drops to -1.5°C, with nightly lows reaching -5.0°C and daily highs around 2.0°C. In contrast, the heat peaks in August, with an average temperature of 26.0°C, and daytime values reaching up to 28.3°C, while nights remain very warm at around 23.7°C.

Summer months in Incheon, especially July and August, are characterized by warm and humid weather. Average daytime temperatures during this period range from approximately 24°C to 28°C (average maximum temperatures for June-August), and nighttime temperatures rarely fall below 22-23°C (average minimum temperatures for July-August). The difference between day and night temperatures in summer is relatively small, at about 4-6°C, creating a sensation of constant warmth. High humidity, as evidenced by the high number of rainy days in July and August, can increase the feeling of heat.

Winter in Incheon brings cold and sometimes freezing weather, especially from December to February. In January, the coldest month, nighttime temperatures consistently drop below freezing, averaging -5.0°C, while daytime highs barely exceed the freezing mark at around 2.0°C. The situation is similar in December and February, with average temperatures around or just below zero (average temperature in December is -0.1°C, February is 0.7°C). During the winter period, daily temperature fluctuations are more pronounced than in summer and can reach 6-7°C (for example, in January, the difference between the average max of 2.0°C and the average min of -5.0°C is 7°C), which means a noticeable difference between daytime relative warmth and nighttime cold.

Precipitation

Incheon experiences distinct seasonality in precipitation distribution throughout the year. The city receives the most moisture during the summer months, creating a clear rainy season. July and August stand out as the wettest months: each sees 8 mm of precipitation, with the number of rainy days reaching 17 and 16 respectively. During this period, precipitation typically takes the form of frequent and sometimes heavy downpours, which is characteristic of the region's summer monsoon climate.

The opposite is true for the winter months, as well as much of spring and autumn, when precipitation is minimal. The driest periods are January, February, March, and December. During these months, only 1 mm of precipitation falls, and the number of days with precipitation usually ranges from 4 to 6. Given that average temperatures in the winter months (e.g., -1.5°C in January, -0.1°C in December) often drop below zero, this light precipitation can fall as light snow or icy drizzle. April, October, and November are also characterized by low precipitation—2 mm and about 6 rainy days each.

Transition seasons, such as May, June, and September, show moderate amounts of precipitation. May and June each see 4 mm, while September sees 5 mm, with about 9 rainy days in each of these months. Thus, when planning a trip to Incheon, you should expect the highest probability of rain in mid-summer, especially in July, when precipitation is recorded on more than half the days of the month. At the same time, from late autumn to early spring, the weather is predominantly dry, with rare and light precipitation.

Packing Tips

When planning a trip to Incheon, it is important to consider its distinct change of seasons, as this will directly affect your wardrobe. Regardless of the time of year, comfortable walking shoes will be your best friend, as the city is great for exploring on foot. Layering your clothing is a universal tip for Incheon, as the weather can be changeable, especially during the transition seasons. This will allow you to easily adapt to temperature changes throughout the day.

If your trip is in the summer (June-August), when it's warm and humid in Incheon, with average temperatures of 21-26°C and the rainy season begins (especially in July and August with 8 mm of precipitation and 16-17 rainy days), pack light, breathable clothing made of natural fabrics. Be sure to bring an umbrella or raincoat, as well as sunscreen and a hat for sunny days. Late spring (May) and early autumn (September) are also quite warm, but with less rainfall, though an umbrella might still come in handy. T-shirts, light trousers or skirts, and a light jacket or cardigan for the evening are suitable for these periods.

For a trip to Incheon during the cold season—from late autumn (November) through winter (December-February) to early spring (March)—you will need a completely different set of items. In winter, average temperatures hover around zero, dropping to -5°C at night, so a warm jacket or coat, sweaters, thermal underwear, a hat, scarf, and gloves will be absolutely essential. Although there is little precipitation in winter (about 1 mm), it may fall as snow. In autumn (October-November) and early spring (March-April), the weather is cool, so layered clothing including warm sweaters, jeans or thick trousers, and a mid-season jacket will be very useful. Don't forget a windbreaker, especially if you plan to walk by the sea, as it can be windy in Incheon.
