General Weather Overview

The climate in Mokpo, located in South Korea, can be described as temperate with four distinct seasons. The city experiences significant temperature fluctuations throughout the year, allowing tourists to enjoy a variety of weather conditions depending on the time of their visit.

Summer in Mokpo is generally warm and humid, with peak temperatures in July and August, when average values reach 25-27°C. This period is also characterized by the highest amount of rainfall and rainy days. Winters, by contrast, are quite cool, with average temperatures around 2-4°C in January and December, and significantly less precipitation. Spring and autumn are pleasant transitional seasons with moderate temperatures and lower humidity compared to summer.

It is particularly worth noting that the summer months, especially July and August, stand out for increased precipitation and the number of rainy days, which may indicate the influence of the summer monsoon. Meanwhile, the autumn and spring months offer drier and milder weather, ideal for walking and sightseeing.

Temperature

The climate in Mokpo is characterized by distinct seasons with notable temperature fluctuations throughout the year. The annual temperature range is quite wide: from cool winters to warm summers. The hottest month is traditionally August, when the average air temperature is 27.2°C. During this period, daytime highs can reach an average of 29.6°C, while nighttime temperatures hover around 24.7°C. Conversely, the coldest month is January, with an average temperature of just 2.9°C. At night, the thermometer in January can drop to 0.1°C, rising to an average of 5.7°C during the day.

The summer months in Mokpo, especially July and August, can be described as warm and, given the number of days with precipitation, likely humid. Average daytime temperatures during this period sit comfortably between 25°C and 30°C, while nights remain warm, with minimum temperatures rarely dropping below 23°C. Winter, spanning December, January, and February, brings cool weather to Mokpo. Average daytime temperatures in the winter months range from 5.7°C to 7.5°C, while nighttime temperatures often approach zero or drop slightly below, creating a fresh and cool sensation.

The transitional seasons, spring and autumn, offer milder and more moderate weather conditions. In spring, from March to May, the temperature gradually rises: from an average of 8.6°C in March to 17.6°C in May. In autumn, from September to November, the reverse process occurs: the temperature smoothly decreases from 23.2°C in September to 11.3°C in November. Daily temperature fluctuations, judging by the difference between average maximum and minimum values, are approximately 5-7°C in most months, which is a moderate figure.

Precipitation

In the city of Mokpo, there is a distinct seasonality in the distribution of precipitation throughout the year. The greatest amount of rainfall occurs in the summer months, forming a distinct wet season, while late autumn and winter are characterized by drier weather.

The summer period, especially from June to September, is the wettest in Mokpo. July and September stand out as the months with the highest amount of precipitation, reaching 7 mm. July also counts an average of 14 rainy days, making it the wettest in terms of frequency. In June, about 6 mm of precipitation falls (9 rainy days), and in August – 5 mm (13 rainy days). At this time, precipitation can take the form of intense downpours, which is typical of the summer monsoon influence in the South Korea region.

The lowest amount of precipitation, at 1 mm each, falls in January and December. October stands out with the fewest rainy days – an average of 5, with precipitation amounting to 2 mm. Winter months, such as January and December, are also characterized by low precipitation levels (1 mm each), although there can be about 8 rainy (or snowy) days. Given winter temperatures, when the average minimum is close to zero (0.1°C in January, 1.8°C in December), precipitation during this period can fall not only as rain but also as snow, although the total amount is small. Spring months (March, April, May) and November are also relatively dry, with precipitation ranging from 2 to 3 mm and 6-8 rainy days.

What to Pack

When planning a trip to Mokpo, it is important to choose your wardrobe correctly, considering the seasonal weather features and its coastal location. In winter (December-February), it is quite cool here, with average temperatures from 2.9°C to 4.6°C. Be sure to bring warm clothes: sweaters, an insulated, thick windproof jacket (as the coastal wind can increase the feeling of cold), a hat, gloves, and a scarf. Although the amount of precipitation in millimeters is small (1-2 mm), there are 6-8 days with precipitation per month, so a light waterproof jacket or umbrella will also be useful.

Spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November) in Mokpo are times of changeable weather, ideal for layered clothing. Start with T-shirts and long-sleeved shirts, supplementing them with light jackets, cardigans, or a windbreaker, which is especially relevant due to coastal winds that can be quite noticeable in the transitional seasons. In spring, the average temperature gradually rises from 8.6°C to 17.6°C, and in autumn, it decreases from 23.2°C to 11.3°C. September stands out with a larger amount of precipitation (about 7 mm and 12 rainy days), so an umbrella will be especially relevant. In other spring and autumn months, there is less precipitation (2-3 mm), but 5-8 rainy days per month still suggest that a light raincoat or umbrella may come in handy.

Summer (June-August) in Mokpo is hot and humid, with average temperatures from 22°C to 27.2°C. July is one of the wettest months of the year with rainfall of about 7 mm and approximately 14 rainy days. Significant precipitation also falls in June (about 6 mm), and in August, although there is slightly less rainfall (about 5 mm), high humidity and about 13 rainy days persist. It is recommended to take light, breathable clothing made of natural fabrics, as well as a reliable umbrella or raincoat. A light windbreaker may be useful for evening walks by the sea or in case of unexpected wind, which happens even in summer. On clear days, you cannot do without sunscreen and a hat. Regardless of the season, comfortable walking shoes are an absolute necessity for exploring the city. It is also useful to have a small backpack for day trips and an adapter for Korean sockets (type F) if your devices have different plugs.
