How to get to Male

Malé is the vibrant heart of the Maldives, a densely populated capital situated in the middle of the Indian Ocean. This city serves as the main gateway to a corner of paradise: it is from here that the journey to white sandy beaches and turquoise lagoons begins. You can reach Malé primarily by plane, after which travelers use speedboats or seaplanes for further transfers.

The primary and practically the only way to enter the country is to fly into Velana International Airport (MLE). This major aviation hub receives flights from all over the world and is located on Hulhule Island, adjacent to the capital island.

The airport is excellently connected to the city by regular ferry services and a road bridge, making the journey to the center as fast and convenient as possible for travelers.

There is absolutely no railway service in Malé due to the region's geographical features. Since the city is located on a small island and the country consists of numerous atolls, trains are not used here as a mode of transport.

Reaching Malé by intercity or international bus is impossible, as the city is separated from the continents by the waters of the Indian Ocean. Bus services exist only within the Greater Malé agglomeration, connecting the airport, Hulhumale Island, and the capital, but this is exclusively a local mode of transport.

Traveling to Malé by private car from another country is impossible due to the nation's island geography. Vehicular traffic is available only locally: between the airport, Hulhumale Island, and the city itself, thanks to the Sinamalé Bridge.

Tourists typically use taxis to move within this zone after arrival; however, it is not possible to reach here "overland" from abroad.

When planning a visit to Malé, it is worth noting that the capital operates under slightly different rules than the resort islands. Here are some practical tips to help make your stay in the city comfortable and hassle-free.

1. Clothing and Dress Code. Malé is a city with strict Islamic traditions. It is not appropriate to walk around in swimwear or overly revealing clothing. Choose light garments made from natural fabrics that cover your shoulders and knees to show respect for local culture and protect yourself from the sun.
2. Transport. The city is very compact, and its historical center is easily explored on foot. For trips to neighboring islands (such as Villimale or Hulhumale), it is most convenient to use ferries or affordable taxis.
3. Finances. The local currency is the Maldivian Rufiyaa (MVR), but US dollars are accepted almost everywhere. However, for paying for small purchases in local shops or ferry fares, it is better to carry some cash in Rufiyaa.
4. Health. The sun here is very intense even in cloudy weather, so sunscreen is mandatory. Do not drink tap water — buy bottled water instead.
5. Communication. The official language is Dhivehi, but English is widely spoken. You will be easily understood in English in shops, hotels, and restaurants.
6. Local Etiquette. It is customary to remove shoes when entering mosques and private homes. The consumption of alcohol is strictly prohibited in the capital (unlike on resort islands), and it is impossible to purchase it in the city.
7. What to Avoid. Refrain from public displays of affection (kissing and hugging) on the city streets, as this may cause disapproval among local residents.
