Madrid Xanadú

About

Madrid Xanadú is more than just a shopping center; it’s a true city of entertainment located in Arroyomolinos, just a 15-minute drive from the center of Madrid. Opened in 2003, it has become one of the largest and most popular shopping and entertainment complexes not only in the capital region but in all of Spain. The center owes its unusual name to the 1981 film "Xanadu" starring Olivia Newton-John.

For shopping enthusiasts, it’s a real paradise: the complex houses over 220 fashion boutiques and stores featuring both Spanish and world-famous brands. But the main highlight of Xanadú is its unique entertainment options. Taking center stage is Madrid SnowZone—the only indoor ski slope in Spain and one of the largest in the world, where you can ski and snowboard all year round. This feature makes it a truly unique holiday destination.

What to Do

To ensure your day at Madrid Xanadú is as packed and comfortable as possible, it's worth thinking through your plan of action in advance. If the main goal of your visit is the unique indoor slope at Madrid SnowZone, we suggest starting there while you're full of energy. It's best to book your ski sessions online in advance, especially on weekends. A big plus is that all the necessary equipment—skis or snowboards, boots, and even outerwear—can be rented on-site. Sessions usually last 2-4 hours, which is plenty of time to enjoy the snow in the heart of Spain.

For those who want to combine several activities, the right sequence is important. For families with small children, we recommend this option: while some family members enjoy shopping, others can have fun at the Chiqui Park play area or explore the underwater world at the Atlantis Aquarium. Afterward, everyone can play a game of bowling together. Speed and excitement fans will enjoy a combination of skiing followed by go-karting. Before you go, be sure to check the official website of the complex—there may be combo tickets available that allow you to visit several entertainment zones at a discount.

Shopping at Madrid Xanadú is a pleasure in its own right, but to avoid carrying heavy bags during active leisure, it's better to save the store visits for the second half of the day. After skiing or visiting the aquarium, you can take a leisurely stroll through the many boutiques. Finishing a busy day is ideal at one of the restaurants or cafes. You can grab a quick bite at the food court without stepping away from the fun for long, or find plenty of venues with diverse cuisine for a quiet family dinner.

Getting There

The Madrid Xanadú shopping center is located in the town of Arroyomolinos, approximately 23 kilometers southwest of central Madrid. Despite being outside the capital, getting there is quite straightforward. Thanks to its convenient location near major transport routes, the complex is easily accessible both for those traveling by car and those who prefer public transport.

For a car trip from central Madrid, you will need about 20-25 minutes depending on traffic. The complex is situated right at the exit of the A-5 motorway (Extremadura Highway), making the route as simple and clear as possible. Xanadú provides ample parking, so you won't have to worry about where to leave your car. You can also use taxi or ride-sharing services, which offer a convenient alternative for those who value comfort.

If you plan to travel by public transport, intercity buses are the most convenient option. Buses depart regularly from the Príncipe Pío transport hub in Madrid directly to Xanadú. Specifically, you can take routes 528, 534, or 539. The journey takes about 30-40 minutes, making this method not only economical but also fairly quick.

History & Facts

The history of Madrid Xanadú began with an ambitious idea from across the ocean. The project was developed by the American company Mills Corporation and officially opened in 2003. It wasn't just another shopping center; it was the company's first such facility outside the US, envisioned as a flagship for further expansion into Europe. From the very start, Xanadú set a high bar, combining shopping and unique entertainment under one roof—a real breakthrough for Spain.

Throughout its history, the complex has changed hands several times, highlighting its high value in the real estate market. In 2006, the Canadian company Ivanhoé Cambridge acquired Madrid Xanadú, helping its creators, Mills Corporation, resolve financial difficulties. Later, in 2017, the shopping center came under the management of Intu Properties. Each change in ownership brought new investments and development plans, allowing the complex to remain modern and attractive to visitors.

One of the most curious facts involves the Madrid complex's "American brother." In 2004, inspired by the success in Madrid, Mills Corporation began construction on a very similar project in New Jersey, USA, called Meadowlands Xanadu, which was later renamed American Dream. However, unlike its successful Spanish counterpart, the American project faced numerous challenges, changes in ownership, and delays. Its first phase opened to the public only on October 25, 2019, 16 years after the triumphant launch of Madrid Xanadú.

Time Needed

When planning a trip to Madrid Xanadú, it's worth keeping in mind that this is not just a place to shop, but a massive entertainment complex. To get a full experience and enjoy the main attractions without rushing, it is recommended to set aside at least half a day. The optimal time would be 4–6 hours, allowing you to combine shopping with one of the main activities, such as indoor skiing or bowling.

If you want to experience the maximum of what Xanadú has to offer, feel free to plan for a full day. Visiting Madrid SnowZone, go-karting, or bowling alone can take up a significant amount of time. Add to that some leisurely shopping in over 200 stores and lunch at one of the many restaurants, and it becomes clear that a full day is needed for a complete experience. This approach will allow you to enjoy all the unique opportunities of this shopping and entertainment center in Madrid without any rush.

Working Hours

One of the main advantages of Madrid Xanadú is its convenient operating schedule. The complex is open to visitors almost year-round, making it easy to include in your plans. Shops and boutiques welcome customers daily from 10:00 AM to 10:00 PM. The entertainment and restaurant area stays open even longer: from Sunday to Thursday, you can enjoy your leisure time from 10:00 AM until 2:00 AM, and on Friday and Saturday, until 4:00 AM. Note that the retail section of the complex is closed on certain public holidays, such as January 1st and 6th, as well as December 25th.

No prior appointment is required for a general visit to the shopping center; however, to participate in popular activities such as skiing at Madrid SnowZone, go-karting, or going to the movies, it is highly recommended to book tickets in advance. This is especially true for weekends and public holidays when the influx of visitors reaches its peak. To avoid queues and guarantee yourself a spot, it's best to check the current schedule and purchase tickets online on the complex's official website.
