Behind a modest entrance on a city street lies Kleine Berlin—the largest system of underground air-raid tunnels in the city of Trieste. This unique historical site, located in Italy, is an impressive labyrinth that served as a shelter during World War II.

The complex is divided into two parts: the Italian section, built for the civilian population, and the German section, which was used by the military as storage and headquarters. Today, it is a museum site where visitors can see authentic interiors, first aid rooms, and even natural stalactites and stalagmites that have formed over decades in the cool, damp underground chambers.
The original inscriptions and paintings on the walls, dating back more than 60 years, give "Kleine Berlin" its special historical value. There are two permanent exhibitions here: one dedicated to the events of World War II, and the second telling the story of the World War I tunnels in the Isonzo River area. This place is perfect for those who want to see the "other" Trieste, hidden deep beneath the cobblestones.
