The interior is a genuine museum of Liberty style (Italian Art Nouveau). From the elegant stained glass to the antique furniture and sculptures, every element recreates the aristocratic aura of the early 1900s. The decor is striking in its richness and detail, reminding guests of the city's Byzantine heritage, but in a more intimate and cozy setting.

The restaurant is highly respected by locals and foodies from around the world. Under the leadership of the Turricchia family, it serves classic dishes from the Emilia-Romagna region, prepared with impeccable taste. This is the perfect place for those who want to experience the true flavor of Italian traditions surrounded by works of art.

What to Do

The main reason to visit Al Gallo 1909 is for a deep immersion into the region's gastronomic culture. Be sure to try the signature handmade pasta and meat delicacies, such as the tender tartare or vitello tonnato. Thanks to its proximity to the sea, the menu always features fresh fish, and game enthusiasts will appreciate the skill of Chef Delia Clapiz, who masterfully combines culinary art with aesthetic presentation.

In addition to the tasting, take time to explore the interior. Observe the original stained glass and the collection of early 20th-century decor—it turns a meal into a real tour. To complete the experience, consult the professional sommelier: the wine list is famous for its variety and includes rare labels capable of surprising even connoisseurs.

Given the trattoria's popularity among locals, we strongly recommend booking a table in advance. In the evening, you can often see a "Completo" (fully booked) sign on the door, which only confirms the consistently high status and quality of this historic venue's cuisine.

Getting There

The restaurant is located in the historic San Biagio district, just 800 meters from the city center. If you are already walking past the main Byzantine basilicas, the walk to the establishment will take no more than 10–15 minutes. This is an excellent opportunity to enjoy the architecture of the residential neighborhoods.

For those arriving from other cities, the most convenient option is to take the train. From Ravenna Railway Station, you can reach the trattoria by taxi in 5 minutes or take a local bus to the city center stops, followed by a short walk. If you are traveling by car, look for parking spaces along Via Maggiore, but keep in mind that traffic restrictions may apply in the historic center.

History & Facts

The history of this place began in 1909 when Giuseppe Turricchia, the great-grandfather of the current owner, purchased an old coaching inn with stables. With experience managing a prestigious hotel, Giuseppe transformed an ordinary roadside establishment into an elegant restaurant that quickly became a magnet for the local elite.

The events of 1944 nearly wiped the trattoria off the face of the earth: a bombing completely destroyed the stables and guest rooms. However, the restaurant building miraculously survived. As a reminder of those times, you can still see a melted iron grate in the main hall—a mark left by shrapnel that hit the building.

Today, Antica Trattoria Al Gallo 1909 is a living family chronicle in its fourth generation. Ferdinando Turricchia, awarded the title of Commendatore of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic, continues the traditions alongside his son Umberto and his wife Delia, carefully preserving the "Belle Époque" atmosphere and unique recipes from the beginning of the last century.

Time Needed

A visit to this establishment is not just a quick meal, but a full-fledged ritual. We recommend setting aside 2 to 3 hours for your visit. This is enough time to enjoy the courses without rushing, explore the extensive wine list, and carefully examine the interior details.

Many guests come here as they would to a museum, so it is worth allocating an extra half hour to look at the paintings, stained glass, and antique furniture that make this place unique. If you plan to have dinner on a weekend, be sure to account for the time needed for advance booking.
