Among the many ancient temples for which Ravenna is famous, the Basilica of San Giovanni Evangelista holds a special place as one of the city's oldest religious buildings. Erected at the beginning of the 5th century, this majestic church became an expression of gratitude from Empress Galla Placidia for being saved during a storm. The austere and monumental appearance of the building, constructed of exposed brick, preserves the spirit of the Early Christian era.

Even though Italy has experienced many upheavals, including the devastating bombings of World War II, the basilica has managed to retain its original three-aisle plan. Today, it is not just an active church but also a significant historical monument, attracting admirers of Gothic and Byzantine heritage.
Of particular value is the white marble portal from the 14th century preceding the entrance to the basilica. This masterpiece of Gothic art is considered unique to the city's architectural landscape. Inside, visitors will find a spacious, light-filled interior where ancient columns stand alongside medieval artifacts.
