General Weather Overview

Gustavia, the capital of Saint Barthelemy, attracts visitors with its tropical climate, which ensures high and comfortable temperatures year-round, as well as a pleasant maritime influence. A key feature of the local climate is the exceptionally low annual rainfall, despite its tropical location. Temperature fluctuations throughout the year are minimal, making Gustavia an attractive destination in any season, creating ideal conditions for beach holidays and enjoying nature.

Although Gustavia has no sharp seasonal changes in the traditional sense, two main periods can be distinguished based on the nature and amount of precipitation. The period from February to June is characterized as the driest, with monthly rainfall amounting to only about 1 mm. From July to November, the probability of precipitation increases slightly, peaking in September (about 7 mm). It is important to understand that even during these months, despite a potentially higher number of rainy days (up to 23 days in September), the rains themselves are most often very light, short-lived, and refreshing, without interfering with holiday plans. Thus, precipitation can be frequent, but its intensity and total volume remain extremely low.

Overall, Gustavia's climate is distinguished by consistently high temperatures and very low total rainfall throughout the year. This allows tourists to enjoy numerous sunny days and the warm Caribbean Sea almost continuously. When planning a trip, keep in mind that summer and autumn months may bring more frequent, but generally insignificant rains, while winter and spring are usually even drier.

Temperature

In Gustavia, year-round warmth characteristic of a tropical climate awaits you. The temperature regime here is notably stable. The annual range of average temperatures fluctuates insignificantly: from approximately 24.8°C in February, considered the "coolest" month, to 27.4°C in August and September – the peak heat months. In February, average minimum temperatures drop to 24.1°C, while maximums reach 25.4°C. Conversely, in August and September, average maximum temperatures can rise to 28.1°C - 28.2°C, while minimum night temperatures hold at around 26.7°C.

The summer months in Gustavia, roughly from June to September, are characterized as consistently hot and sunny. Average daily temperatures during this period confidently stay above 26.5°C, creating ideal conditions for enjoying the Caribbean Sea and beach holidays. The "winter" months, from December to March, offer extremely mild and pleasant weather. Even in the coolest month, February, the temperature remains very comfortable, making Saint Barthelemy an attractive destination for those wishing to escape the cold.

One of the remarkable features of Gustavia's climate is the very small difference between day and night temperatures throughout the year. Daily fluctuations between average maximum and minimum temperatures rarely exceed 1-1.5°C. This means evenings and nights remain just as warm as the days, ensuring constant comfort and eliminating the need to pack much warm clothing even for evening strolls.

Precipitation

One of the key climatic features of Gustavia is the insignificant amount of precipitation throughout the year. Despite the city being in the tropics, there are no prolonged rainy seasons here in the traditional sense. The annual distribution of precipitation allows for distinguishing wetter and drier periods, yet even in the "wettest" months, the total amount of moisture falling remains very moderate.

The nominal season with increased rainfall in Gustavia falls in the period from July to November. The absolute leader in rainfall is September: this month sees an average of 7 mm of moisture, and the number of days with precipitation reaches 23. It is followed by October (4 mm and 19 rainy days) and August, July, November (3 mm of rainfall each and 17-19 rainy days). The nature of precipitation in these months is most often short-lived and light rains or drizzle, which quickly give way to sunny weather and do not cause significant discomfort.

The driest period in Gustavia is observed from February to June. During these months – February, March, April, May, and June – the average monthly rainfall is only 1 mm. March stands out as the "driest" month in terms of days with precipitation – there are only about 8. In January and December, 2 mm of precipitation falls, with the number of rainy days being 18 and 17 respectively, which once again emphasizes that even with frequent precipitation, its intensity is extremely low. Snowfall is absolutely uncharacteristic for Gustavia and Saint Barthelemy in general.

What to Pack

When planning a trip to Gustavia, keep in mind that warm tropical climate awaits you all year round. The basis of your wardrobe should be light, breathable clothing made from natural fabrics such as cotton or linen. Don't forget swimwear, shorts, t-shirts, sundresses, and light trousers. Since the sun here is very active, be sure to bring high SPF sunscreen, headwear (a hat or cap), and high-quality sunglasses. Evenings in Gustavia are also warm, so you are unlikely to need heavy clothing, however, a light wrap or stole may come in handy for walks along the sea or dinner on an open terrace.

Although the total rainfall in Saint Barthelemy is small, in some months, especially from July to November, frequent but usually short and light rains are possible. Therefore, a compact umbrella or a light waterproof windbreaker might prove useful without taking up much space in your luggage. For walking around the city and beach, choose comfortable shoes: sandals, flip-flops, espadrilles, or light sneakers. If you plan to explore the island's hilly terrain, pack a pair of comfortable trainers. The layering principle is not as relevant here due to consistently high temperatures, but having a light long-sleeved shirt for sun protection or for air-conditioned rooms would not be amiss.
