Precipitation

Rethymno experiences a pronounced seasonality in precipitation, typical of a Mediterranean climate. The year is clearly divided into a wet winter period and a very dry summer. Most of the rainfall occurs from late autumn to early spring, while the summer months are almost entirely rain-free.

The wettest months in Rethymno are December and January, when an average of 4 mm of precipitation falls, and the number of rainy days reaches 16 and 15, respectively. February is also quite wet with 4 mm of precipitation and 12 rainy days. November also brings a noticeable amount of moisture (3 mm of precipitation and 11 rainy days). In contrast, the summer period is extremely dry. June, July, and August are the driest months, when rainfall tends toward zero (0 mm), with only 1-2 rainy days throughout the entire month. This is the ideal time for those who prefer sunny weather without rain. Transitional months, such as April, May, September, and October, are characterized by a gradual decrease or increase in rainfall and rainy days, offering comfortable conditions with a lower probability of prolonged rain compared to winter.

Packing Tips

When planning a trip to Rethymno, it is important to choose the right wardrobe to stay comfortable in any weather. From June to August, you can expect true Mediterranean heat with average temperatures of 23-25°C and highs of up to 28°C. Rainfall during this time is a rarity. Therefore, your suitcase should definitely include light, breathable clothing made of natural fabrics, swimwear, sunscreen with a high SPF, a hat, and sunglasses. Don't forget comfortable sandals or flip-flops for the beach and light shoes for walking through the city's charming streets.

Spring (April-May) and autumn (September-October) in Rethymno offer pleasant, warm weather. Average temperatures range from 15°C to 23°C. During these periods, the principle of layering works best: t-shirts, light sweaters or cardigans, and jeans or trousers. It can be a bit cooler in the evenings, so a light jacket or windbreaker will come in handy. While there is little rain, especially in April, May, and September, the number of rainy days increases in October, so a compact umbrella or a light raincoat may be useful. In winter, from November to March, the weather turns cooler, with average temperatures dropping to 11-16°C, and this is the rainiest season with 11-16 wet days per month. You will need warm clothes: sweaters, a fleece jacket, a waterproof jacket, closed-toe shoes, and, of course, an umbrella. Regardless of the season, comfortable walking shoes are your main companion for exploring Rethymno.
