Overview

Sangju features a temperate climate with four distinct seasons, offering travelers a variety of experiences throughout the year. Winters here are cold and relatively dry, with average temperatures around freezing and frequent nighttime frosts. Spring brings a pleasant warming trend, while autumn delights with mild and comfortable weather. In contrast, summer in Sangju is hot and humid, with average temperatures rising to +25°C and above.

A key feature of the weather in Sangju is the pronounced summer rainy season. Precipitation peaks in July and August, when the number of rainy days increases sharply. This is an important factor for trip planning, as you should be prepared for frequent downpours in mid-summer. During other seasons, especially winter and mid-autumn, rainfall is significantly lower, making the weather more predictable and convenient for outdoor activities.

Temperature

The climate in Sangju is characterized by four distinct seasons with significant temperature fluctuations throughout the year. Winters here are cold, while summers are hot and humid. The coldest month is January, when the average temperature drops to -1.0°C, and nighttime frosts can reach -5.1°C. In contrast, the heat peaks in August, with an average temperature of 25.9°C and daytime highs approaching 29.4°C.

The summer months, especially July and August, are marked not only by high temperatures but also by increased humidity, as evidenced by the high rainfall. The difference between daytime and nighttime temperatures during this period is not very large, creating a sense of constant warmth. Winter, spanning December and January, brings consistently cold weather with temperatures around zero during the day and negative values at night. This period sees minimal precipitation, and the weather is mostly dry and frosty.

Spring and autumn are comfortable transitional seasons. In spring, from March to May, temperatures rise quickly from cool to pleasantly warm. In autumn, from September to November, there is a gradual cooling. These seasons are characterized by significant daily temperature fluctuations: days can be very warm while nights remain cool. For example, in April and October, the difference between the daytime high and the nighttime low can exceed 10°C, making these periods ideal for those who prefer moderate weather.

Precipitation

The city of Sangju experiences a pronounced seasonal precipitation pattern, with a clear distinction between a wet, rainy summer and a dry, cool winter. This pattern is driven by the influence of the summer monsoon, which brings the bulk of the annual moisture.

The peak of the rainy season occurs in July and August. July is the wettest month of the year, averaging the highest amount of precipitation with rain occurring for about 17 days. August is also very rainy, with 16 wet days. June and September can be considered part of an extended wet season, as these months also see significant rainfall, averaging 10 days each.

The driest period lasts from late autumn to the end of winter. November, December, January, and February are the driest months, with minimal precipitation and only 4–5 days of rain or snow. Given that temperatures in the winter months often drop below freezing, precipitation during this time of year usually falls as light snow. Spring months like March and April, as well as October, are transitional, with moderate and infrequent rain.

Regardless of the time of year, comfortable shoes for long walks should be the main item in your luggage. For the spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) months, layering is the ideal approach. The weather during these times is changeable: warm days can be followed by cool evenings. Bring t-shirts, light jumpers, cardigans, and don't forget a windbreaker or a mid-season jacket. An umbrella will also be useful, especially in spring when the number of rainy days increases.

Summer months, from June to August, in Sangju are hot and humid, with peak precipitation in July. Your suitcase should be filled with light, breathable clothing made of cotton or linen.
